It's not easy to define Jethro Tull, they are a mix of progressive, folk, hard rock, blues, classical music and also jazz and electronic rock, however it's a great group.
I post something from every album to show their different style.

My Sunday Feeling (This Was 1968)

Bourée (Stand Up 1969)

With You There to Help Me (Benefit 1970)

Aqualung (Aqualung 1971)

Bungle in the Jungle (War Child 1974)

Minstrel in the Gallery (Minstrel in the Gallery 1975)

Too Old to Rock 'n' Roll: Too Young to Die (Too Old to Rock 'n' Roll: Too Young to Die! 1976)

Songs from the Wood (Songs from the Wood 1977)

Heavy Horses (Heavy Horses 1978)

Orion (Stormwatch 1979)

Fylingdale Flyer (A 1980)

It was made as a single track, which is difficult to get used to, but there are some 'phases' that are just brilliant so give it a chance to play!
And the original fold-out 'newspaper' in the album cover has kept me occupied for hours at a time!
An all-time classic!

Thick as a Brick was considered to be Jethro Tull's first Progressive Rock Concept Album.
Actually, Ian Anderson decided to "come up with something that really is the mother of all concept albums" to be a spoof of the albums of Yes and Emerson, Lake & Palmer.
It was intended as a satire of the whole idea of the "Concept Album".
Sadly, it was so good that many listeners completely "missed the joke".

Talking about Progressive Rock/ metal rock and concept albums.
AYREON-The Human Equation is a great Album. It´s like a rock opera.

The man behind it is the Dutch songwriter, producer, singer, and multi-instrumentalist Arjen Anthony Lucassen with
features guest appearances from several musicians previously unrelated to the project, including James LaBrie of Dream Theater,
Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth, Eric Clayton of Saviour Machine, Devin Townsend, Heather Findlay (Mostly Autumn) and Devon Graves (Dead Soul Tribe).

Ayreon - Isolation. It´s song 2 from the Album.

gave me a start for this kind of gerne. Must be somewhere about 2003 ( I´m not that old Big Grin).

@Bad-Boy:
Yep, one of my fav Progressive Metal rock bands too ( not to forget Dream Theater ).
APC-Thirteenth Step is great Thumb up with The noose as a highlight.
And Tool- Lateralus is great too.

Being 'that old' and living through the beginnings of Progressive Rock probably gives me a different view to those encountering it retrospectively.
The flamboyance and virtuosity shown by bands like 'Yes' and 'ELP' were considered rather pretentious and pompous by many, hence my saying "it can be a very broad genre".
I agree that there can be no "the definitive Progressive song" to suit all listeners or to cover the full breadth of the genre which is why my statement was made in the way it was.
I had not heard 'The Tangent' before and they remind me somewhat of 'Yes' so I may listen to some more but it is unlikely. I have listened to some 'King Crimson' but never felt like pursuing the experience.
There are 3 definitive Van Der Graaf Generator albums I would recommend to anybody just discovering them:-
The Least We Can Do Is Wave to Each Other
H to He, Who Am the Only One
Pawn Hearts
They were recorded in 1970/71 and I still regularly listen to them.

It depends on how you define Progressive Rock, it can be a very broad genre.
I'm sorry but to me it shows too much of where Progressive Rock went bad, the fancy riff repeated with each band member having a go.

But then I consider this to be probably the definitive Progressive Rock song and judge all others against it ...
