There will be no Australian Open lead-up matches played at Melbourne Park on Thursday after a hotel quarantine worker from the Grand Hyatt tested positive to COVID-19. Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews said up to 600 people linked to the Australian Open, including players and staff, have been classed as "casual contacts" with the quarantine worker and will need to be tested and self-isolate until they receive a negative test result. The positive COVID-19 case has put the remainder of the Melbourne Summer Series (the two ATP 250 "Murray River Open" and "Great Ocean Road Open", the three WTA 500 "Gippsland Trophy", "Yarra Valley Classic" and "Grampians Trophy") and the ATP Cup in doubt, with the decision on whether Friday's fixtures will go ahead to be made later on Thursday, officials said. Despite the positive test, Mr Andrews remained confident that the Australian Open, which is due to begin on February 8, will not be impacted. "There are a number of 500-600 people who are either players or officials and others who are casual contacts," Mr Andrews said on Wednesday night. "They will be isolating until they get a negative test and that work will be done tomorrow. That may have an impact in tomorrow's play in the lead-up events, but at this stage there is no impact to the tournament proper".

The "U.S. Men's Clay Court Championship" in Houston was canceled for the second year in a row because of the Coronavirus pandemic, part of a series of changes to the men's tennis calendar announced by the ATP on Wednesday. The Houston tournament was supposed to be played April 3-11. It was among the dozens of professional tennis events scrapped in 2020 while the tours were on hiatus for several months. Until then, the "U.S. Men's Clay Court Championship" had been held every year since 1929. Among the other 2021 updates the men's tour said it was making "in the face of scheduling challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic" was the move of the Hungarian Open clay-court tournament (usually held in Budapest in April) to Belgrade, Serbia. The tournament director of the Belgrade event will be Djordje Djokovic, a younger brother of No. 1-ranked Novak Djokovic. The "Serbia Open" is scheduled to be held April 19-25. Belgrade previously hosted a tournament from 2009 to 2012. The ATP added two tournaments just for 2021, in Singapore right after the Australian Open ends next month and in Marbella, Spain, starting April 5. The main-draw or qualifying fields are being expanded at some men's tournaments to give more players opportunities to compete.

The WTA has today announced a provisional 2021 Tour calendar that maps out the season through July 11. Having previously announced the first seven weeks of the season, this latest update represents the next 20 weeks of 2021. The calendar reflects the Tour kicking off at the "Abu Dhabi WTA Women’s Tennis Open" in January through "The Championships - Wimbledon" in July. The first four WTA 1000 events of the year are also represented, including the "Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships", the "Miami Open presented by Itaú", the "Mutua Madrid Open" and the "Internazionali BNL d’ Italia" in Rome. The current schedule reflects a traditional WTA Tour calendar for the majority of the season past mid-March, albeit with a few changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The "BNP Paribas Open" in Indian Wells will not be held in its regularly scheduled timeframe in March and alternatives are being assessed for a potential date later in the season. Further updates to the WTA Tour calendar will be announced in due course, including the second edition of the "Shiseido WTA Finals" in Shenzhen.
