2021 WTA FINALS - DAY 8 (LAST) :
AKRON Tennis Stadium, Guadalajara (Mexico) : SINGLES - THE FINAL : Garbiñe Muguruza (6) won her 10th WTA tournament in career (first WTA Finals and 8th on hard), defeating Anett Kontaveit (8) 6-3, 7-5 In an unprecedented final (for both it was the first at the Masters) the 28-year-old Spanish of Venezuelan origin (she was born in Caracas) N° 5 of the ranking and 6 of the seeding won the first singles Masters for her country and from Monday she will return to the world podium, in third position. The challenge for the title was, for the seventh time since 2003 (the year in which the Round Robin was introduced), the rerun of a match already played in the Round Robin in the "Teptihuacàn Group" and won in two sets by Muguruza, who had broken Kontaveit's streak of 12 consecutive victories. The cabal was not too favorable to Garbiñe, given that, on four of the previous six occasions, those who had lost in the group had then won the title, but this time it didn't go that way. Kontaveit, who had lost her serve only four times in the whole tournament (two against Muguruza in the Round Robin and two against Badosa in Semifinal), immediately offered a break-point in the first game and in the third she was broken. The Estonian immediately broke the Spanish back, but, in the seventh game, she found herself in difficulty and was broken again. This time Muguruza did not get distracted and, with the second break in a row, she closed the set 6-3 after 43'; In the second set, Kontaveit tried to react, Muguruza saved two break-points in the third game, Kontaveit one in the sixth but in the seventh the Spaniard lost her serve, with the Estonian going 5-3, but from then on she didn't even have a chance to win a game, while Garbiñe won four consecutive games, flying towards victory. However, it was still a week to be remembered also for Anett Kontaveit, the real revelation of Guadalajara (and of the last part of this season), who reached the Final in her first WTA Finals : the 25 yo Estonian remains the player who has won the most matches this year (together with Tunisian Ons Jabeur) : 48 against 17 defeats and, despite having lost her sixth career title, she will reach another "best ranking" in these weeks and from Monday she will be world's N° 7.
