In the meantime, however, follow each new geological investigations . First, during the construction of the new road around the banks of the rising lake, began to notice cracks in the ground .. the previous surveys were limited to test the soundness of the land on which the dam is developing. While there weren't been extensive surveys on the shores of the lake that would be born ... SADE obviously it addresses to a great person of that time, an Austrian, founder of the geotechnical school in Salzburg .. a big one, Leopold Muller. And after some months, Muller ends his relationship ... So: the slopes of the mountain where there are villages inhabited are in place. But on the slopes of Mount Toc I spotted a landslide 2 km long, which extends vertically for 600 meters and a thickness of about 200 meters in depth!!!!!!!!

Between 1958 and 1959, it happens to all. SADE decided to build a road around the lake, and not the footbridge .. the people are angry, but the only explanation they get is that the ground does not allow the construction of the bridge! No irony, but .. you build the highest dam in the world with around 150 million cubic meters of water, potential for now, and those same slopes of the two mountains can not hold a simple footbridge???The events continue..In a neighboring valley, a piece of mountain collapses in a lake enclosed by a dam built by SADE some years before: a wave 20 meters high kills a representative surveillance .... Months later, in France, the dam Massenet at Frejus, collapses: 400 deaths! And here you build a huge dam under Mount Toc (which, in Venetian dialect, it means 'piece' .. and that, in the dialect of a neighboring region, is derived from 'Patoc', which means 'rotten'!), In a valley called vajont, which in local language means 'go down'! Those who are superstitious could touch their balls to infinity, in front of these strange names...

In 1957 work began on the construction of the dam and at the same time, SADE submits its request to raise the dam from 200 to 261 meters .. is committed to building a footbridge that joins the two shores of the lake, allowing farmers to be able to reach more briefly their cultivable land, which generally were just on the other side of the small villages .. further agrees, at the request of the Ministry of Public Works, to do other geological investigations on the safety of the banks, considering the possible variation in height, and the water content of artificial reservoir ...

After the war, begin the expropriation of land to local farmers ... An author helps me to identify a scene ... The police go to these farmers to sign the acceptance of expropriation, and of course these rebel ... 'Sign here' ... 'No, why should I?' ... 'Because we have to build a work of public interest' ... 'I'm public, too!!! ... Go and build it somewhere else! '. Difficult do understand, at these ignorant peasants, that between the valleys of the Dolomites, just their valley has the potential to become the bank of the water! Meanwhile, in 1948 the engineer Carlo Semenza, the most important member of the SADE, commissions further study geological, on various grounds, to his friend DalPiaz... He wants to raise the dam of another 60 meters ... You may be thinking 'ok, what do you want to be 60 meters?A little more water in the lake ...'. No, no, raise the dam a third compared to the original project means that the lake does not increase to the same extent, but ... from 58 million, switch to 150 million cubic meters of water!! More than double the 7 other dams nearby!! From that idea Semenza, was born a famous phrase still used in Italy, thanks to the response of the geologist Dalpiaz, that said .. 'I must confess that the new questions raised, MAKE ME TREMBLE THE VEINS AND THE WRISTS' ...

This request actually comes 12 years earlier, in 1928, when a famous geologist of the time, Giorgio Dalpiaz, draw up a report in which, speaking of the Vajont valley, in essence says that it is a valley that does not have problems different from other in which they had already built the dams ... The geological relations continue in 1940 and, in fact, the SADE submitted a request for approval of the work ... Problem! World War II! The request was rejected .. motivation ... come the next year, we now have to go to war against France! In 41 ... come the next year we now do the war on England! In 42 ... we have to go to Russia!! Irony, of course ... But the reality is that the war really blocked any initiative of this kind: there are not enough politicians to vote in parliament. But, incredibly, in 1943 SADE gets permission ... With fraud! There was no quorum of voters were only 13 of 34 ... But everyone in Rome closes his eyes ... And the project kicks off ... You will build a dam 200 meters high, which will close a lake containing 58 million cubic meters of water! Many? A few? First, I talked about seven other dams built in nearby areas. Well, do you know in total how many cubic meters of water they contain? Less than 70 million ... The Vajont lake, the bank of the water, it will be almost as big as all the others put together ....

A bank of water ... Beautiful words, beautiful view, although in our current is better to be wary of a bank!!! Can you imagine? "Lehman bros' bank of water corporation"!!! ... Evenforthis story it would have been the case to be wary, given the events! But back to the story ... In that slice of Italy there are already seven artificial lakes in the mountains, for two good reasons: the second is that, there, the lands (to be expropriated) are cheap ... The first, due to the difference in height, is that up there the water falls faster and so the hydropower plants produce more energy ... I say .. but the water then you have to return it to the famous Piave river! Answer: oh yeah, stupid!!! Noooo!! Not all ... Because will be built pipes into the mountain that leading part of the water used or less, in this bank of the water that it was decided to be the valley of the small Vajont torrent, and because it is south of the other reservoirs, and because it is a very narrow valley, well adapted to be closed by a dam ... In 1940, for these reasons, SADE founded a project called 'Grande Vajont', and they submit it to the ministry in Rome

But the problem was it, the Piave! which is called river, but that is only a torrent disguised as a river, this rogue ... It gives water 'in the autumn until you want', but in winter says, 'I'm frozen!' ... In spring, 'water until you want', but in the summer, 'I'm dry!' .... And the SADE can not tell to his customers: 'Look, I give you electricity from September to November. Then from December to February, do it your own way!! Then I give it to you back again from March to June, and, in summer, is better you close and go on vacation!!!' The current cannot be set aside ... But the water yes! Rather than throw it in the Piave, after using it, with the risk that the river in certain month is dry or frozen, rendering it unusable, why don't you retain a part of it? why not create a bank of water??

Rebels against whom? And why build a dam in the valley? SADE (An acronym ... nothing to do with the Baron De Sade...!!! In Italian, Società Adriatica Di Elettricità ) is the name of the company, who has at his command an engineer who designed dams around the world.. the Vajont was his last, the highest dam in the world .. we speak of a society, making a more useful comparison, like the Ferrari, a top group.. Were born after the war many artificial lakes behind many dams to produce hydro-electric . Almost all managed and built by them ... In a short time ... Wanted to get back in that valley where looking for mushrooms? Now there is a dam ... Or go in the other to fish in the river?Another dam... Or in that...??? Noooo, dam, dam, dam again!!! In those years, you could not fall asleep in a lawn, because you could wake up with a dam under your ass! And in this region there were already many artificials lakes, but this was born for a reason even more special .. We joke yet to explain better. Along the Piave river, in all of its tributaries, the SADE has built seven installations which produce 6-7 percent of the entire Italian needs ..

Erto and Casso were the two rebels villages ... Two that, as often happens between neighbors, they don't love each other! Villages which moreover, an ancient land register, had gathered in a single common, called Erto-Casso... Two that have a name as a swear word, especially if reversed: Casso Erto in Venetian dialect (my own!) it means ...Cock Open!!! They can't not even be put on the geography books for children! Inhabitants practically separated in the house, where absolutely not born intermarriage between girls and boys of the two villages ! In common only the taverns where drink and play cards, between a chat and ten curses! That the pastors of the two countries have decided not to eradicate, because it was outside of their pastoral mission. In fact, the blasphemy was not part of the religion, in that context, but it was helpful for the syntax : it replaced all the articles and the conjunctions ... Removing the blasphemy, the phrases didn't flowed more in an understandable way! What a mess...

That is what it is today 'Vajont' ... A tragedy caused by man, a dam as a monument as a symbol, but also the chill you feel when you think about what is under your feet in the valley, or over some villages and your p.o.v. when you are in that ones... The story is already over here ... But every piece of history, finished or not, has a beginning and its development ... It is sometimes difficult to think that the story could not be different from the reality that was formed ... This story could easily be different ... Here's why ... And here begins a narrative very attached to books read and less, almost nothing, in my experience ...
Vajont landslide, 260 million cubic meters of rock, falls in the lake below, raising a wave of 50 million cubic meters, of which only half crosses the dam, down in the valley below, to delete 5 villages. The recurring question is: how was it possible that people have not been warned in time, that there were no warning signs estimates? And here is my story. Longarone, the principal village in the area, is in the valley of the Piave river, saw the birth of the dam, but do not see what there is behind or on the sides of the lake which is about to be born ... Remember the movie 'Dead Poet Society'? The scene where the students get on the bench and see change their point of view, but looking at the same things? A bit like when I see the view from under the mountain ... then reached the top of the same, the same scene looks like a different thing.. Here's what I tell you, going over the dam, to tiny villages forgotten by God, perhaps, but even more by the people of the valley below ... Yet there it was a war against the company that built the dam . But we must go back by many many years... |
|
|
|
|
|
The man is curious ... Even with cynicism ... Anyway, I go ... Longarone, the road climbs, the dam is always sadly spectacular, in front ... I arrive in the cursed valley, over the dam ... The silence, first of all ... But no emotion! Strange, say to myself ... but really this it seems like many other valley ... The mountain has collapsed and you still see the never ending sign of the landslide, along its slope, but the feeling is that to try something maybe I should have lived in those years ... I make pictures to the back of the dam by a hill ... And there ... I feel like a void under... A thought ... But here ... Here there was the lake, how can I ..????
For someone like me who often rises well above 3000 meters, sometimes with supports rather precarious and some problems of dizziness, tell you that I did not feel safe on that mass absolutely stable, it may seem like a my fiction .. but really I did not see the time to move from there! And still I didn't understand the situation .. I saw that mountain with that great rift, but its height was not so high .. I continue, and drive to Erto, the first village, which should be just above the damn lake ... And I understand them ... And I do understand... First of all, look at that hill where I was, which is the landslide: was very much higher than the village ! And the village had to be above the lake a lot ! Chills ... Then, as usual, you encounters the classic grandfather of the area who understands your thoughts.. you see the sign of the landslide along the slope of the mountain .. but this sign ends up far below, far below of what you see, far below the level of the lake that you will never see"... Silence...Absolute cold silence... |

To define briefly what happened in those years it was decided to build, in a deep and narrow valley, a dam that constitute a reservoir from which to draw electricity. The dam was then the highest in the world ... The problem is that one side of the lake was formed by the slopes of the Mount Toc, its name, that was known to have a rock subject to collapse ... In one of those moments when water in the lake behind the dam was at a dangerously high level, the mountain is broken and collapsed inside ... The dam held, but the water came out and erased an entire village in the valley of the same, Longarone, as well as various fractions ... 2000 deaths, more or less, of a disaster, however, expected for years ... There are impressive numbers and figures, as well as those of the dead, but I would like to name them more later, calmly ... It is enough just to know that the valley narrow and high, which became artificial lake that day was completely filled by the landslide, 260,000,000 cubic meters of rock ... It is hard to imagine ... It is also for that one day I went to see those places, never saw before...
