Re: happy birthday, Star Trek... 8 sept 1966

In the early 60s, Gene Roddenberry, a former police officer and famous writer of westerns, they start flashing some ideas for a new television series of adventure. One of his projects is focused on an airship, Julius Verne style. These projects, then, evolve in STAR TREK, defined by Roddenberry "... a caravan to the stars...". In 1964, Gene Roddenberry presents a proposal to MGM for this series, very revolutionary. The result is the first of many waste in the opinion of most of those who worked in the television industry, in fact, "... science fiction is too expensive and too difficult to produce!". The Desilu Studios, however, agree to begin the project STAR TREK Roddenberry and, with them, signing a contract for the construction of this innovative series. The NBC agree to fund the pilot, "The Cage" (Talos zoo).
In 1965, the full episode is delivered to NBC, who rejects him, and asks for a second pilot, extensively revised by the removal of Mr. Spock and the 'number one' role then entrusted to a woman. Roddenberry accepts the removal of vice-captain, but not the alien. And the check. The following year, the NBC accepts the second pilot episode of the show and part of the whole series in its programming for the autumn of the following year. On 8 September 1966, finally airs the first episode of Star Trek: "The Man Trap". The troubled beginning of a story (for now) 46 years long...

And the first words should be those...
"Space, the final frontier. Here are the voyages of the Enterprise during its five-year mission, direct to exploration of strange new worlds, to seek other forms of life and new civilizations, up to where no man has gone before"
