2022 AUSTRALIAN OPEN - DAY 14 (LAST) :

Men' s Singles Final : Rafael Nadal (6) won his 90th ATP tournament in career (21st Grand Slam and second Australian Open), defeating
Daniil Medvedev (2) 2-6, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 after 5h 24'

First set remained balanced for the first 4 games (with Nadal saving 2 break-points in the third game), then Medvedev broke the Spaniard twice in a row, closing the set 6- 2 after 42'; in second set, Nadal recovered, breaking his opponent for the first time in the fourth game and going 4-1, Medvedev didn' t give up, breaking the Majorcan back in seventh game, but Nadal still managed to break the Russian again in the next game, going to serve for the set at 5-3, but, after having failed a set-point, he lost his serve, with Medvedev going 5-5, so the set was decided by the tie-break, in which Nadal went immediately 2-0 the 5-3, but Medvedev, scoring 4 consecutive points, closed the tie-break 7 points to 5 after 1h 24', going 2 sets to 0; the third set (with the Russian saving 1 break-point in the first game and the Spaniard recovering from 0-40 in the sixth game) was kept in balance until the ninth game, when Nadal scored the deciding break, closing the the set 6-4 after 1h 04' and reopening the match; in the fourth set, the Majorcan started better, saving 2 break-points in the second game and taking a break advantage in the third game, the Russian immediately recovered it, but then he lost his service again in the fifth game, with Nadal going first on 4-2, then, after having cancelled 2 consecutive break-points, on 5-3, finally completing the comeback with another 6-4 in 1h 02'; the fifth and decisive set saw Nadal break Maedvedev in the fifth game, moving first to 4-2 and then to 5-3, but, just when he was serving for the title, after going 30-0 , he lost 4 points in a row, so the Russian went 5-5, but in the next game, he was broken again and this time Nadal didn't miss the appointment with history, closing 7-5 at the first match-point and setting the Slam record with 21.

2022 AUSTRALIAN OPEN - DAY 13 :

Women' s Singles Final : Ashleigh Barty (1) won her 15th WTA tournament in career (third Grand Slam and first Australian Open), defeating
Danielle Rose Collins (27) 6-3, 7-6 (2) after 1h 27'

First set remained in balance until the 3-2 for Barty, when, with a double fault, Collins was broken, with Barty going 5-2 and then closing the set 6-3 after 32'; in the second set, the American freed herself from brakes and fears, immediately flying 3-0 and then, with another break in the sixth game, going to serve for the set on 5-1, but, as soon as the third set began to appear concrete, Collins' fears returned, so the world's N° 1, who never lost a set in the tournament, returned forcefully into the match, breaking two consecutive times her opponent, without even giving her a set-point, so the set was decided by the tie-break, in which Barty, now on the wings of enthusiasm, immediately went 4-0, then 5-1, and closed the match 7-2, becoming the first Australian to triumph in the Australian Open Singles in 44 years (the last was Christine O'Neil in 1978) and the second active tennis player, after Serena Williams, to have won at least one major on all surfaces, after her triumphs on the grass at Wimbledon in 2021 and on the clay court of Roland Garros in 2019, while Collins, in addition to the excellent tournament she played, which gave her the first Grand Slam Final in career, can console herself also with her best ranking : from Monday, she will enter for the first time in the WTA "Top 10", in tenth place.
