Young Driver Test - Day 2 :

Ricciardo top for Toro Rosso but spins in Red Bull :
All eyes were on Daniel Ricciardo at the second day of the Young Drivers’ Test at Silverstone and he duly set the quickest time of the day. But he did so in his regular Toro Rosso – not the Red Bull he drove in the afternoon as the team evaluate whether to hire him as a replacement for Mark Webber in 2014. Ricciardo spun off seven laps into his run in the RB9 without damaging the car. It was a Toro Rosso one-two at the top of the times sheets as Carlos Sainz Jnr lapped within five hundredths of a second of Ricciardo’s mark. That put him between Ricciardo’s two quickest efforts – he placed third with a lap of 1’33.187 in the RB9. Ricciardo’s spin was the second of the day. Robin Frijns went off at the end of his half-day in the Sauber. He spun into a gravel trap at Luffield while pushing for a quick time and brought out the red flags. Nico Hulkenberg took over the car in the afternoon. Five teams split their running between two drivers during the day. Among them were Williams, who gave Daniel Juncadella some extra seat time after his test yesterday was cut short.

Horner admits Ricciardo test linked to 2014 seat :
Red Bull team boss Christian Horner has hinted Daniel Ricciardo's test this week is a 2014 audition as the world champions look to replace the departing Mark Webber. The news is a blow for Australian Ricciardo's similarly 23-year-old Toro Rosso teammate Jean-Eric Vergne, who earlier was also considered in the running for the top seat alongside Sebastian Vettel. Unlike Ricciardo, Frenchman Vergne has not been called up to test the championship-leading RB9 at the Silverstone test. "We're very keen to have a look at Daniel as a prospect for next year," Horner told British broadcaster Sky on Wednesday. "It's a great opportunity for him," he added.
Horner also said 2007 world champion Kimi Raikkonen is in the running for the seat. Asked if it is now a two-horse race between the Finn, who currently drives for Lotus, and Ricciardo, Horner admitted: "Essentially, probably."

Ex-F1 boss Kolles tried to blackmail Wolff :
Former HRT boss Colin Kolles tried to blackmail Mercedes chief Toto Wolff earlier this year, it has emerged. We reported earlier that a conversation between Austrian Wolff and a then-unnamed former F1 team boss was "secretly recorded" and then threatened to be used against him. Bild newspaper had said Wolff spoke negatively about his own boss, Ross Brawn, colleague Niki Lauda, and also Daimler chairman Dieter Zetsche, whilst divulging details of his clashing co-ownership of the Williams team. A subsequent report by the magazine Sport Bild said Wolff had been taped in mid February this year by former HRT and Force India boss Kolles, in Barcelona. That report said Kolles then threatened to release the details of their explosive conversation unless he paid a sum of money. Reportedly, Wolff and Kolles have settled their dispute with the intervention of F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone, while Mercedes has obtained a court order preventing the publication of the details of the conversation. Sport1 said Kolles would not comment, and Mercedes also declined to comment.The German news agency SID said Wolff could not be reached at time of publication.

No trial decision for Ecclestone until September :
The Munich court will wait until mid-September to decide if the Bernie Ecclestone bribery case will be brought to trial. The court decided in May to prosecute F1's chief executive for paying a $44 million bribe amid the sale of the sport to CVC some years ago.
The charges were finally received in English by Ecclestone and his lawyers on Wednesday. The 82-year-old Briton's lawyers said in a statement that they will reply vigorously to the charges, which they say rely heavily on the testimony of jailed German banker Gerhard Gribkowsky. "The main topic of the response will be the changing 'confessions' of Mr Gribkowsky," the statement said.
Ecclestone told the Financial Times on Wednesday: "It will be an interesting case." The court reportedly said a decision about whether to send the charges to trial would probably not be made until mid-September. A court spokesman confirmed those reports, adding that Ecclestone's defense team has until mid-August to submit a response to the charges.

F1 young driver test: McLaren's Kevin Magnussen tops day one :
Kevin Magnussen ensured McLaren topped the first day of Formula 1's Silverstone young driver test. The Dane had not been a factor at the head of the timesheets until the final 20 minutes, when he bolted on medium tyres and set a 1m33.602s that would prove unmatched for the remainder of the session. While the afternoon did not yield massive improvements, positions changed hands multiple times as drivers found incremental gains . Among them was Paul di Resta, the first of this year's regular drivers to run on Pirelli's new tyres. The Scot took over from morning pacesetter James Calado in the Force India and immediately improved upon the latter's benchmark. He was temporarily demoted to second by Red Bull's Antonio Felix da Costa, who was given a full day of running following a late reshuffle that means Mark Webber will no longer test. Di Resta regained the advantage after a run on Pirelli's hard compound, but his 1m33.774s was eclipsed by Magnussen late on. Da Costa ended the session third, ahead of Calado and Williams's Daniel Juncadella. The Spaniard's morning was disrupted for bodywork repairs, and while a clear afternoon lifted his total to 55 laps, he was still some way short of Magnussen's tally of 100. Johnny Cecotto (Toro Rosso) edged Sauber reserve Robin Frijns in the fight for sixth after his own late improvement. Frijns set his best time early in the afternoon, putting him fourth at the time, but dropped back as Magnussen and then Cecotto found time. Nicolas Prost (Lotus), Davide Rigon (Ferrari) and Alexander Rossi (Caterham) rounded out the top 10. Rossi's day was brought to a close 30 minutes before time due to a mechanical issue.
Marussia locked out the final two spots through Tio Ellinas and Max Chilton, both of whom were more than three seconds off the pace. Chilton's afternoon was severely disrupted by an ECU issue that meant he was only able to get out in the final hour, and only able to complete 25 laps in total - the majority of which he devoted to a late long-run.

Ecclestone says he is being charged in bribery case :
Bernie Ecclestone has told the Financial Times he faces charges in the investigation into whether he bribed German banker Gerhard Gribkowsky. Gribkowsky was sentenced to serve eight-and-a-half years in jail last year. He abandoned an appeal against the conviction in May. Now Ecclestone says his lawyers “have received an indictment. It’s being translated into English.”
Ecclestone added: “We are defending it properly. It will be an interesting case. It’s a pity it’s happened.” Gribkowsky was arrested in January 2011 and Ecclestone later admitted making a payment to him. “I was asked to appear and I appeared,” said Ecclestone earlier this month. “Anything I said at the trial was the truth so I have no reason to believe or expect that anything could be turned against me.”

No Red Bull test for Webber after FIA “clarification” :
Red Bull have dropped Mark Webber from their test schedule at Silverstone following a “clarification” from the FIA.
The team originally planned to run both their race drivers plus Daniel Ricciardo and two young drivers at the test.
However they have altered their plans “following a clarification of the permitted programmes from Pirelli and the FIA for this week’s Silverstone test”. As a consequence, Ricciardo is now running in the slow originally designated for Webber, while Antonio Felix da Costa will do a full day’s running today. The plan for Friday is unaffected:

Lotus scrap plan to run Raikkonen at test :
Lotus have decided not to run Kimi Raikkonen at this week’s Young Driver Test as originally planned. Instead of running Raikkonen on Friday Nicolas Prost will have another run in the car. Trackside operations director Alan Permane said: “Once details of what race drivers were allowed to do here became apparent, we would have only been able to conduct a very limited programme with Kimi. “If we were to run him, it would compromise the other development work we want to do with the car here.
“By running Nico again we’ll be able to build on the work already carried out and hopefully be in the best position to develop the E21 ahead of Budapest, whilst also conducting the necessary tyre testing for Pirelli.” Red Bull have also scaled back the programme for their race drivers and will not run Mark Webber at the test.

Wolff secretly recorded amid F1 war :
An explosive conversation with Mercedes director and Williams co-owner Toto Wolff was "secretly recorded" by a former F1 team boss. That is the claim of the German newspaper Bild. Correspondent Nicola Pohl reports that the phone call was then transcribed and threatened to be used against the 41-year-old Austrian. She said the story is the latest chapter in a 'war' that has broken out in the paddock, following Mercedes' ascendance to the very top of the F1 pecking order, and the 'test-gate' scandal.
In the taped conversation, Wolff is thought to have spoken negatively about not only his F1 boss, Ross Brawn, but also the Daimler chairman Dieter Zetsche. He also reportedly spoke about the details of his Williams shareholding and his clashing duties at Mercedes, and his 'complicated' cooperation with Niki Lauda.

Caterham focusing on 2014 development :
Caterham is already focusing on 2014, current race driver Giedo van der Garde has revealed. According to the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, the Dutchman is scheduled to test Pirelli's new Hungary-spec tyres at the Silverstone test late this week. But the 28-year-old rookie revealed: "The team has been focusing on next season." Van der Garde said the focus at Silverstone, then, will be for the race drivers to try Pirelli's new tyres. "For my teammate Charles Pic and me it is important to see how the tyres feel. Probably they will have harder compounds that we can use for longer." Caterham has had a difficult 2013 campaign, faltering initially with an overly conservative car and pushing to catch up with only rival Marussia. "For this season," van der Garde admitted, "there is not much more to gain. "We should focus on the fight with Marussia, as we are not going to be able to close the gap to the others."

Skepticism about Sauber's Russian deal :
The extent of Sauber's Russian rescue deal, and the emergence of future team driver Sergey Sirotkin, caught the world of formula one by surprise. Russian F1 commentator Alexei Popov is quoted by Basler Zeitung newspaper: "I had to read the (press release) several times before I could believe it." Some of the sport's sceptics are still not sure. There are reports of links to the KGB, but in truth very little is known about the entities listed in the Sauber release. The likely debut of a 17-year-old Russian driver next year is also highly unusual. "First of all I want to wish Sergey (Sirotkin) and his associates good luck," said Oksana Kosachenko, the former manager of ex-F1 driver Vitaly Petrov. "But so far, he is not a formula one driver. This is about certain arrangements which, undoubtedly, will be implemented." Germany's Bild newspaper, however, claims that "not a cent" has yet flowed from Russia to Hinwil. But a team boss who has worked with Sirotkin and his Russian partners before, Andreas Jenzer, told the Tages-Anzeiger newspaper that his dealings were all positive. "When I first came into contact with his Russian supporters in 2008, I also had a little bit of concern initially. "But I've never had a bad experience in all of the years," Jenzer said. It seems that much will depend on whether Sirotkin makes his race debut next year, based on a series of track tests that could include appearances on Friday mornings in 2013. But German broadcaster Christian Danner warned: "Unfortunately he is light years from the levels of a current formula one driver." Red Bull's Dr Helmut Marko knows more about the pecking order in Sirotkin's current race series, Formula Renault 3.5.
"Sergey is currently in the midfield, and he has struck me as not bad. Better than (2013 Sauber driver Esteban) Gutierrez.
"But he will have to show what he can do under pressure." A major hurdle for Sirotkin will be getting his mandatory FIA super license, as Marko insisted: "You can't just get your sponsors to buy it for you!" Some suspect the Russian deal was one done out of desperation by the financially-dying Sauber. A Swiss supplier to the struggling F1 team told Aargauer Zeitung newspaper that his company has not been paid a cent by Sauber since December of last year. A Swiss media source told us: "Unfortunately, Sauber has to play the game (with the Russians), but it's better than shutting up shop." Speed Week also thinks the Russian deal is a good one, because it's "only a matter of time before normal sponsorships flow from Russia, with Gazprom in pole position".
Bernie Ecclestone, meanwhile, hailed the Sauber deal, and also Tuesday's news that the backmarker Marussia has inked a long-term engine deal with Ferrari. "I'm glad that Sauber and Marussia are continuing," the F1 chief executive told Blick newspaper.
"But how serious the situation really was with these teams, I don't know." Ecclestone added that Russian president Vladimir Putin is supportive of the Sauber deal. "I was with him in Moscow three times," said the 82-year-old. "He is very enthusiastic and helpful, which will benefit the whole of F1."

Sainz disappointed Alonso sitting out Silverstone :
Rising Spaniard Carlos Sainz Jr has expressed disappointment he will not share a F1 circuit with his hero Fernando Alonso this week. Sainz, the 18-year-old son of the world rally legend and namesake, has been called up to test at Silverstone not only by Toro Rosso, but also the senior Red Bull team. Ferrari's Alonso, however, has turned down the opportunity to test, because race drivers will be limited to testing only Pirelli's new Hungary-spec tyre. "I'm not testing, because I'm not allowed to test (car developments)!" he is quoted by Italy's La Repubblica. "Instead, I have important work to do on the simulator." The Brazilian correspondent for O Estado de S.Paulo newspaper, Livio Oricchio, said Alonso has "shown who is boss" at the Maranello based team.
Indeed, Alonso's teammate Felipe Massa will be in action this week, as will championship leader Sebastian Vettel, Lotus' Kimi Raikkonen and others. McLaren, on the other hand, will not field race drivers Jenson Button or Sergio Perez. Nonetheless, Sainz jr is disappointed Alonso will not be at the British grand prix venue. "Yeah, I would have loved that," he told EFE news agency. "So instead of being 110 per cent happy, now it's just 100," he joked. Sainz jr played down suggestions his tests for both of Red Bull's F1 teams is a clear sign he will be on the grid next year. Indeed, it is thought that if Red Bull calls up one of Toro Rosso's current race drivers to replace Mark Webber, the other will stay put at Faenza next year and be joined by Antonio Felix da Costa. Sainz jr agreed: "Being here (at Silverstone) doesn't guarantee anything. "I want to make clear that my goal is to do well in GP3, then try to be in the (Renault) World Series. I think there are still a few years until the time (for F1) comes."

Ecclestone receives bribery indictment :
Bernie Ecclestone has been formally charged by German prosecutors for bribery, it emerged on Wednesday. It has been known since May that the Munich prosecutors decided to indict the F1 chief executive for paying millions to jailed former F1 banker Gerhard Gribkowsky amid the sale of the sport some years ago. Bloomberg quoted a court spokesman as confirming that although the charges were filed in May, they were only served on Wednesday after being translated into English. He said more details will be released in a court statement. Briton Ecclestone, 82, has consistently denied wrongdoing. He said by telephone on Wednesday: "The lawyers have accepted an indictment. "It means they have to reply to the indictment which they are strenuously doing," Ecclestone is quoted by the Associated Press. Ecclestone's German lawyer, and F1 owner CVC, did not comment.

The result of the German F1 Grand Prix :

Sebastian Vettel resists Kimi Raikkonen for home win :
Sebastian Vettel finally won his home grand prix in Germany as he resisted big pressure from Lotus's Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean at the Nurburgring. As the Lotus duo took turns to hound Vettel for most of the race, it looked unlikely that the Red Bull driver would be able to cling on for victory, but he ultimately managed to after a dogged drive. Polesitter Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes was swamped by the faster-starting Red Bulls off the line, as Vettel and Mark Webber moved into an immediate one-two.
Webber stayed right with his team-mate until the first pitstops, when he was sent out before his right-rear wheel was fully attached.
The tyre shot off and hit a television cameraman further down the pitlane. The cameraman was taken to hospital for observation.
Hamilton lost ground with heavy tyre wear as the race progressed, but Lotus moved in the opposite direction. Grosjean ran 13 laps on softs in his first stint - far better than anyone else managed - and that jumped him from fifth to second. The Frenchman then chased Vettel down, though he could not get closer than two seconds behind. A safety car just mid-distance closed things up and brought Raikkonen from 12s down into contention. The caution period was required after Jules Bianchi's Marussia retired in a cloud of smoke and flames, and then began drifting back across the circuit on the chicane approach after its driver had got out. The leaders made their second stops behind the safety car but could not make it from there to the end. Grosjean was first to pit, with Vettel reacting on the next lap and staying ahead. Raikkonen ran 10 laps further then pitted for softs, allowing him to charge back past Grosjean (who obeyed a team order to not delay the Finn) and then catch Vettel. But the world champion had just enough in hand to hang on and win by a second. Grosjean resisted a similar late surge from Fernando Alonso to keep third. Alonso's Ferrari team-mate Felipe Massa spun out at the first corner just four laps in while running sixth. Hamilton ended up fifth, passing two-stopper Jenson Button's McLaren on the last lap. Webber was brought back to the Red Bull garage and given a new wheel, then recovered from a distant last to seventh, just ahead of McLaren's Sergio Perez. Nico Rosberg could make little progress from 11th on the grid and finished ninth ahead of countryman Nico Hulkenberg's Sauber. Daniel Ricciardo faded from sixth in qualifying to 12th, between the Force Indias.
Williams appeared to have a shot at points for a while, before pitstop delays hampered both its drivers.

TV cameraman hospitalised after Red Bull wheel incident :
A Formula 1 cameraman has been taken to hospital following an accident with Mark Webber's Red Bull in the pitlane during the German Grand Prix. Paul Allen was hit on the left hand side by a wheel that had flown off Webber's car during a botched pitstop.
Allen was conscious throughout the accident and transferred immediately to the Nurburgring circuit's medical centre.
A statement issued by the FIA said: "He was treated at the circuit medical centre and then transported by helicopter to Koblenz Hospital.
"The Briton has been kept there, under observation. Further information from the hospital will be provided as soon as it becomes available."

Lewis Hamilton denies Sebastian Vettel pole :
Lewis Hamilton beat Sebastian Vettel in the German Grand Prix pole fight, as his Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg did not even make Q3. In a close fight at the end of the session, Hamilton produced a 1m29.398s to beat Vettel's Red Bull to the top spot by 0.103 seconds. Hamilton had held provisional pole on a 1m29.540s after the first Q3 runs, with Vettel going 0.039s quicker before the Mercedes responded and beat him. Mercedes appeared to make a simple miscalculation with Rosberg, believing his early Q2 time - good enough for second when it was set - would be sufficient. But the second half of the field was shaken right up when nearly everyone improved in final seconds, and as the likes of Jenson Button, Daniel Ricciardo and Nico Hulkenberg squeezed into the top 10, Rosberg was pushed out. Mark Webber put the second Red Bull third, ahead of Lotus pair Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean.
Ricciardo - whose Toro Rosso team-mate Jean-Eric Vergne was only 16th - continued his excellent qualifying form with sixth.
Ferrari opted out of the pole fight. Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso ran medium tyres in Q3 rather than the faster softs and ended up on row four. McLaren's Button followed the same tactic in ninth and did not do a Q3 flying lap. Hulkenberg reached Q3 for Sauber and followed suit. Neither Force India reached Q2, with Paul di Resta 12th and Adrian Sutil a very disappointing 15th at home.
Sergio Perez looked in danger of getting knocked out in Q1 at one stage, so his eventual 13th place was not as bad as it might have been. His McLaren will share row seven with compatriot Esteban Gutierrez's Sauber. Williams joined Caterham and Marussia in the bottom six.
