Men' s Singles : Rafael Nadal (2) won his 84th ATP tournament in career (19th Grand Slam and fourth US Open), defeating
Daniil Medvedev (5) 7-5, 6-3, 5-7, 4-6, 6-4 after 4h 49'

In front of the 25.000 spectators of the Arthur Ashe Stadium, Rafael Nadal won Flushing Meadows for the fourth time in his career after the triumphs of 2010, 2013 and 2017, winning his 19th Slam title, the second this year after Roland Garros and now, in the all-time ranking, only Roger Federer is ahead of him, one Major away. The one against Medvedev was also the 64th victory at the US Open, a tournament in which he took th biggest number of victories after Roland Garros and Montecarlo, while Daniil Medvedev, who was the youngest finalist in New York after Novak Djokovic in 2010 and the first Russian to play for the title in a Slam after the success of Marat Safin at the Australian Open in 2005, can console himself with a statistic : he played for the title in Washington, Canada, Cincinnati and US Open, and, before him, in the Open era, only Ivan Lendl in 1982 and Andre Agassi in 1995 did the same; it was a two-faced game, with Rafa losing his service in the third game of first set, but immediately breaking the Russian back, then closing the set with a surgical break on 6-5 after 64'; second set was decided for Nadal by a single break, done in the sixth game and held until the final 6-3 after 48'; in third set, Nadal broke the Russian in fifth game and seemed to be on his way to triumph, but Medvedev immediately recovered the disadvantage, reopening the match by closing the set in twelfth game after 64'; in fourth set the two players kept their service without risks, but, on 5-4 for the Russian, Nadal got broken from 40-15 ahead, losing the set after 53'; in final set, however, Medvedev began to feel fatigue, with Nadal taking advantage and, with two breaks in fifth and seventh game, going to serve for the title on 5-2, but the Russian didn' t not give up and broke the Majorcan, saving also two match-points in the next game, on 5-3, so, on 5-4, Nadal went to serve again for the match and this time he closed at third match-point, not before having had to save a dangerous 5-5 ball, bringing home his 19th Slam, one of his most complicated ever.

Women' s Singles Final : Bianca Vanessa Andreescu (15) won her third WTA tournament in career (all on hard and first Grand Slam), defeating
Serena Williams (8) 6-3, 7-5 after 1h 39'

Women' s tennis found a new champion : it' s Bianca Vanessa Andreescu, the first Canadian ever to win a Slam trophy; in US Open final, the 19 years old from Mississauga, N° 15 of the ranking and seeding, defeated Serena Williams, N° 8 of the ranking and seeding; first set saw Andreescu immediately break Serena in first game and keep the lead until 5-3, when, thanks to a double fault by the American on the set-point, the set ended with a 6-3 after 43'; also in second set, the Canadian immediately moved ahead with a 2-0 break, Williams, however, this time immediately broke her back, but then she was broken twice consecutively, sending Andreescu to serve for the match on 5-1 : here, however, the young age of the Canadian played a bad trick on her and, after having wasted a match-point in that game, Williams broke her and went 3-5, when the Canadian, still on serve to close the match, was broken again and the match was tied at 5-5, but, on this occasion, Andreescu showed a great coolness, holding her service at 30 and then breaking Serena in the next game, closing the match with a winner at her second match-point in that game (third in total); thanks to this success, obtained at her first participation in New York and at her first final in a Major, from tomorrow Andreescu will become world' s N° 5, naturally her best ranking : Bianca is the fourth player born from 1996 onwards to become Major Champion and, before her, only Jelena Ostapenko (at Roland Garros 2017), Naomi Osaka (at US Open 2018) and Ashleigh Barty (at Roland Garros 2019) had succeeded; one more bitter final, instead, for Serena, who, from tomorrow, will fall in the ranking in 9th position : once again, the fourth since her return after motherhood, Seren has lost a Slam final without winning even a set : she won her 23rd Slam at 2017 Australian Open, when she was already pregnant with her little Olympia, but since her return to the tour, almost a year and a half ago, she has not yet won a tournament and the (questionable) record of Margaret Court (24 Slams), has turned into a real nightmare.
