Cool

R.E.M. - Losing My Religion

"Losing My Religion" became R.E.M.'s highest-charting hit in the United States, reaching No. 4
on the Billboard Hot 100 and expanding the group's popularity beyond its original fanbase.

It was nominated for several Grammy Awards, and won two for Best Pop Performance by a
Duo or Group with Vocal and Best Short Form Music Video.

Re: Your All Time Favourite Tunes

I lost another of my musical heroes today - David Bowie - one of the all-time greats.

His chameleon personality and eclectic music encouraged generation's to be free and to be themselves.

He gave us so many good sounds it's difficult to pick a couple of songs to post here but here are my favourites - it may just be me, but these seem to define him too - he was Ziggy, he was a rebel, they were great times and he was my hero...

Impossible not to include this from 1972

but my favourite track on Ziggy Stardust was:

1974 original version from Diamond Dogs

Originally from 1976, but this version is from the Serious Moonlight tour in 1983 (I saw him at the NEC)

The original 1977 version featuring Robert Fripp (King Crimson) and his wonderful haunting guitar feedback:

And finally the live version of the same song from Live Aid in 1985 - this is the one on the mp3 in my car. I don't know if it was the energy of the day, the cause they were representing or just that it's one of the best live performances ever, but it still sends shivers down my spine when I hear it

NB For anyone who's interested but hasn't already found it, his entire set from Live Aid is on youtube. He and Queen had already been around for 10+ years by 1985 and were considered 'old' by the 80's generation but they were the two standout performances on the day. Bowie & Freddie had such presence when they were on stage that I can't think of anyone, except maybe Sinatra or Elvis, that could compare - and now sadly, they're both gone.

Re: Your All Time Favourite Tunes

Sad news of Lemmy's passing today - the man was a Legend
Saw a documentary a while ago and even he was amused he'd outlasted so many contemporaries despite his life of total hedonism and (substance/alcohol) abuse!
Always preferred the original Hawkwind version of his eponymous theme (before they kicked him out mid-tour for getting busted):

I know I've posted it before but it's a great track so no apologies!

And here he is with Hawkwind in 1972 (yeah, I looked like them too - although not in 72!)

I remember seeing the Bomber, Overkill & No Sleep Til Hammersmith tours - Happy days for him & me!

In those days (before he moved to LA) he could frequently be found hanging out on a bar stool in a pub near Newbury but he was pretty intimidating even then & sadly I never spoke to him.

And here he is having some fun with Girlschool who supported them on the Overkill tour:
