Kevin Magnussen : 7th place Rosberg Wins Austrian GP : Nico Rosberg claimed the first F1 victory in Austria in more than a decade as he held off team-mate Lewis Hamilton to win on Sunday afternoon. Williams took the fight to Mercedes in Sunday's 71-lap Austrian GP, a race that was initially led by Felipe Massa. The pole-sitter made a flying start to lead ahead of Rosberg and Hamilton, who jumped from ninth to fourth on the first lap alone, even overtaking Fernando Alonso through Turn 8. The first round of pits stops saw a change in the order as Rosberg seized the advantage ahead of Bottas and Hamilton, while Massa was the big loser, dropping from first to fourth. The second round of pit stops had Hamilton come in first, a lap ahead of Rosberg and two before Bottas. That allowed Hamilton to leapfrog Bottas but not Rosberg. And when Massa pitted it was a Mercedes 1-2 followed by a Williams 3-4. Managing the gap to his team-mate, Rosberg crossed the line 1.9s ahead of Hamilton to take his third win of this season, extending his lead in the Drivers' Championship to 29 points over the British racer. Bottas joined the Mercedes duo on the podium while Massa was fourth ahead of his former Ferrari team-mate Fernando Alonso. Sergio Perez, who ran a long first stint, pulled off a late pass on Kevin Magnussen to take sixth place, while Nico Hulkenberg's ninth place meant yet another double points finish for Force India. Daniel Ricciardo was eighth with Kimi Raikkonen completing the top ten. Ricciardo had the better day out of the two Red Bull racers as Sebastian Vettel's challenge ended on lap two when he "lost drive" and was forced to pull over on the side of the track. The reset worked and he was back up and running but down in 22nd place. His race went from bad to worse when an attempted pass on Esteban Gutierrez - who had earlier been penalised when Sauber released without his rear right properly attached - resulted in a broken front wing for Vettel. The reigning World Champion's afternoon came to an end on lap 36 when he was told "box, box, we are retiring the car." He was the second retirement of the day after Daniil Kvyat's race ended 10 laps earlier when he went off at Turn 5 with "no brakes." Left with a shredded rear right tyre and most likely suspension damage, he parked his car. Jean-Eric Vergne joined his team-mate when he pitted on lap 61 having also lost his brakes. Romain Grosjean : 16th place Felipe Massa leads all-Williams front row : Felipe Massa led a shock Williams one-two in qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix. The Brazilian's last-gasp effort knocked team-mate Valtteri Bottas off top spot in the final seconds of qualifying, giving him pole by just under a tenth of a second. It was Massa's first pole since the 2008 Brazilian GP and the first for Williams since the 2012 Spanish GP. World championship leader Nico Rosberg was third fastest after failing to improve on his final attempt, but while he missed out on top spot he will be happy to see title rival Lewis Hamilton down in ninth. Hamilton's first run in Q3, which would have been good enough for fifth on the grid, was disallowed for exceeding track limits at the exit of Turn 8 after the rear stepped out. His second attempt was ruined by a spin at Turn 2, meaning that he did not set a time, putting him ahead of only the Force India of Nico Hulkenberg. Fernando Alonso was just over half-a-second off the pace in fourth place. Daniel Ricciardo was fifth fastest ahead of McLaren's Kevin Magnussen, with Daniil Kvyat a superb seventh. Kimi Raikkonen was the slowest of those actually to register a lap time in Q2, ending up eighth. Sergio Perez was 11th after being bumped out of a Q3 position late on, missing out by just under a tenth of a second. But he will start 16th thanks to the five-place grid penalty he received for causing a collision with Massa in the Canadian GP two weeks ago. The Mexican's former team-mate Jenson Button, whose morning practice session was ruined by a rear brake problem, and Sebastian Vettel, whose lack of pace in the final sector cost him, were just behind Perez. Pastor Maldonado outqualified Lotus team-mate Romain Grosjean for the first time this year, the pair sandwiching 15th-placed Jean-Eric Vergne's Toro Rosso. Adrian Sutil was the fastest of those to be knocked out in Q1, ending up just four-thousandths slower than Maldonado. He was comfortably ahead of Sauber team-mate Esteban Gutierrez, with Jules Bianchi 19th fastest. Kamui Kobayashi did a good job to split the Marussias, a tenth faster than Max Chilton, with Marcus Ericsson unable to improve on his second run and ending up last. Numerous drivers had lap times automatically disallowed during the session for running wide beyond track limits at the exit of Turn 8. Marcus Ericsson - Caterham - 1:12.892 +3.044 21. Max Chilton - Marussia F1 Team - 1:12.915 +3.067 22. Jenson Button - McLaren - 1:14.237 +4.389 Bottas pips Hamilton : Valtteri Bottas brought Mercedes' run of P1s to an end in final practice in Austria as the Williams driver beat Lewis Hamilton by 0.05s. Although Kevin Magnussen set the first time of the session, a 1:16.6, he soon found himself in second place and by some margin as Nico Rosberg crossed the line with a 1:12.9. Magnussen, though, came back with a 1:11.4 while Rosberg improved by stayed second. Lewis Hamilton put his MP4-29 up into third place. As the trio continued lapping, Magnussen lowered the benchmark to a 1:10.998 but that was soon bettered by both Williams drivers, Felipe Massa going quickest ahead of Valtteri Bottas. The Williams duo swapped positions with Bottas edging ahead by 0.036s while Fernando Alonso climbed to third place, 0.135s down. It was, however, all change again when the Mercedes drivers returned to the action for their second stint of the morning. Rosberg hit the front with a 1:10.058 while Hamilton, despite a few good sectors on different laps, only moved up to fifth. With 15 minutes remaining in the session, the drivers began to swap to the supersoft tyres. But with the track temperature dropping by a few degrees, getting heat into the rubber proved a problem for some. Fernando Alonso went quickest on his second supersoft lap only to be pipped by Bottas who in turn lost out to Massa. The Brazilian also needed a second flying lap to clock his 1:09.901. The session appeared as if it would end with another Mercedes P1 as Hamilton crossed the line with a 1:09.898 only for the Brit's time to be beaten by Bottas by 0.050s. Massa was third, a further 0.003s down. Meanwhile, there were problems for Jenson Button who reported that he had "no engine braking at all." Pulling into the pits, McLaren had to deal with a "small brake fire" before putting his MP4-29 up on a jacks where it remained for the rest of final practice. Kind Regards Shaky - Schumi . |

Hi, Shaky, a question.
Perez is sanctioned by 5 positions. In the battle with Hulkenberg: do they count these 5 positions or it will apply itself later? |

Marcus Ericsson - Caterham - 1:13.596 +4.054 Hamilton moves ahead in second practice : Lewis Hamilton returned to the top of the timesheets during Friday afternoon's second practice for the Austrian Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver set a 1:09.542 on Pirelli's Super Soft tyre to lead team-mate and championship leader Nico Rosberg by almost four tenths of a second. Ferrari's Fernando Alonso finished third. Hamilton, who finished second to Rosberg in the morning's opening session at the Red Bull Ring, quickly stated his intentions on the early Soft tyre runs, moving to the front with a mid 1m10s effort. And when the switch to Super Softs arrived, he extended his advantage further, smashing the 1m10s barrier to finish 0.377s ahead of Rosberg. Although he completed the top three positions, Alonso was almost a second down on pace-setter Hamilton, a deficit that suggests the Silver Arrows machines will be out of reach in normal conditions this weekend. But it was much closer behind, with Alonso to 14th-placed Esteban Gutiérrez covered by a similar margin. Williams duo Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa, separated by just two thousandths of a second, finished fourth and fifth respectively, with reigning quadruple World Champion Sebastian Vettel placing his Red Bull sixth. Jenson Button wound up seventh but complained over the radio that his McLaren felt the same as it had done during the Canadian Grand Prix weekend, despite sizeable updates being brought to Spielberg. Daniel Ricciardo, winner of the last race in Montreal, and rookie Kevin Magnussen were close behind their team-mates in eighth and ninth, while Toro Rosso's Jean-Éric Vergne rounded out the top 10 runners. Kimi Räikkönen, the final driver to break into the 1m10s, could not improve on his FP1 result of 11th. Lots of drivers made mistakes as they continued to adjust to the track, but there were no major incidents Kind Regards Shaky - Schumi |

Marcus Ericsson - Caterham - 1:17.501 +6.206 Rosberg quickest in first Austria practice : Nico Rosberg set the standard during Friday morning's opening free practice session for the returning Austrian Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver clocked a best time of 1:11.295 at the renovated Red Bull Ring circuit to lead team-mate Lewis Hamilton by 0.140 seconds, with Ferrari's Fernando Alonso third. Following the early flurry of installation laps at the Spielberg venue, the Silver Arrows drivers were the first to embark on meaningful runs, gradually working their times down from the 1m19s to the 1m12s. Hamilton held the advantage at this stage, while Rosberg was forced to bring his car back to the pits after reporting a car problem. But Rosberg, after a lengthy spell in the pits, moved ahead later in the session with his low 1m11s effort. The German was one of two drivers, along with Ferrari's Kimi Räikkönen, to trial additional titanium skidblocks with the hope of producing sparks – part of an initiative by the FIA to make the sport more spectacular. Alonso finished third fastest, just ahead of former team-mate and current Williams man Felipe Massa. Jenson Button led McLaren's charge in fifth, edging out Force India duo Sergio Pérez and Nico Hülkenberg. Valtteri Bottas, whose session ended slightly early due to a technical problem, wound up eighth, while the second McLaren of Kevin Magnussen and Toro Rosso's Jean-Éric Vergne completed the top 10 positions. Räikkönen classified 11th, continuing to struggle with the engine and brake settings on his F14 T. Both Red Bulls finished outside the top 10 and were lucky to avoid serious incidents at the final corner. Sebastian Vettel, 15th, was the first to run wide, entering a full spin after putting all four wheels over the exit kerbs, before Daniel Ricciardo, two places ahead, also misjudged the corner and suffered a wild slide. Adrian Sutil and Marcus Ericsson were both restricted to single lap figures amid technical trouble. Ericsson's Caterham ground to a halt at the exit of the pit lane 20 minutes into the session, while Sutil spent the majority of his morning conducting interviews in the paddock after his car suffered a broken turbo hose. Austrian Grand Prix - Spielberg - Red Bull Ring
1964 Zeltweg Airfield (only one edition) 1970 – 1987 Osterreichring (historical track, very fast and spectacular with many ups and downs) 1997 – 2003 A1 Ring the A1 Ring has been bought and renamed Red Bull Ring by the Austrian energy drinks company. The Red Bull has restructured and modernized infrastructure, leaving unchanged the track layout used from 1997 to 2003 In my opinion, the original layout (Österreichring) was without doubt one of the most beautiful and challenging racetrack in the world, but too dangerous. The narrow Start/Finish straight caused many crashes, during the years and in the last one edition(1987) they had to restart the race 3 times. In the seventies and eighties, the race week end was played in mid-August. I remember the edition of 1975 in the pouring rain, but the victory of Elio De Angelis (1982) was special. That was his first victory in career on the Lotus-Cosworth. De Angelis was chased to the checkered flag by Keke Rosberg(Nico’s dad), and won one of the closest finishes of all time. Elio was a great pilot and also a classically trained pianist. He died in 1986, driving a Brabham at the Paul Ricard circuit (Le Castellet) Stats 2014 after seven races Wins: Hamilton (4); Rosberg (2); Ricciardo(1) Pole positions: Hamilton (4); Rosberg (3); Fastest Lap: Rosberg (3); Hamilton, Vettel, Raikkonen and Massa(1) Podium: Rosberg (7); Hamilton (5); Ricciardo(3); Vettel(2); Magnussen, Button, Perez and Alonso(1) Pirelli has chosen for this Gran Prix the “Soft yellow” and “supersoft Red” as in Monaco and Montreal season 2003. Last one pole position at Spielberg 1.09.150 (Schumacher) but with very different rules I completely agree with Shaky F1 gets worse year after year with more and more absurd rules. in this way they turn away even more by fans. |

Valtteri Bottas : 7th place Ricciardo takes maiden win in Montreal thriller : Daniel Ricciardo became Formula 1′s newest winner, when he powered to a well calculated victory in the Canadian Grand Prix, keeping patient before pouncing in the final laps to snatch the big prize from Nico Rosberg who spent the last quarter of the race nursing home a seriously malfunctioning Mercedes to second place, managing to keep at bay Sebastian Vettel who made it onto the final step of the podium. Circuit Gilles Villeneuve tends to deliver incident packed races, and the 2014 edition on the Ile Notre Dame was no different. Drama started early on as Marussia drivers Max Chilton and Jules Bianchi made contact on the opening lap, both crashed violently in and around Turn 4, spreading debris and fluids across the track, bringing out the safety car for several laps. When racing resumed it was all about the Mercedes duo at the front with Rosberg chased hard by Hamilton, and the rest left battling it out in their wake. During their duel for the lead there were some big moments, one in which Rosberg was lucky to escape a penalty when he cut the final chicane with Hamilton tucked under his rear wing.Shortly after the half way mark the bullet proof Mercedes finally showed a fallible side as both cars, almost simultaneously suffered with a lack of power which then led to a loss of rear brakes. Suddenly the silver cars, still circulating in tandem, were two seconds a lap slower than their rivals. The pair snapping at each other, but on lap 48 Hamilton drove into the pits and retired, while Rosberg began a remarkable feat of nursing the stricken W05 home. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff explained, “We had a problem with both cars on the same lap. When Lewis pitted, because of pit stop, the temperatures rose too high in the brakes and he lost them. Nico saved it with a brilliant drive.” “We knew brakes could be an issue, but this particular issue occured because if you loses the MGU-K, it’s much harder on the brakes. And with the rise in temperatures in the pits you end up having a real problem,” explained Wolff. “We had two drivers who were perfect. You could have said maybe freezing order would help the end result, but that’s not what we want to do and not what people want to see.” Behind Rosberg at that stage, Sergio Perez was in inspired form as he opted for a one stop race in the Force India, but it came at the cost of outright pace and as a result he soon had a train of cars behind him with Ricciardo and Vettel among them, along with Nico Hulkenberg and Felipe Massa who was on fresh rubber and also having an impressive race. In fact the Brazilian at one stage looked good for victory, as his Williams was by far the faster car in the final stages of the race. Fast forward to the final lap, with Perez’s tyres all but done, Massa appeared to miscalculate his overtake as the pair headed into Turn 1. The Williams clipped the Force India and the two cars slammed the barriers, both drivers lucky to climb out of their respective wrecks. By this point Ricciardo had overtaken Rosberg a couple of laps earlier to take the lead and victory was in the bag as the safety car was deployed for the final lap of the grand prix to tend to the Massa-Perez incident. Few would have bet much on either Red Bull driver taking the win, but as the Mercedes powerhouse imploded, Ricciardo sensed the opportunity and seized it. First by stalking stubborn Perez relentlessly, and then hunting down Rosberg to take his first Formula 1 victory. The day belonged to the Australian, who summed up his race afterwards, “I am still a bit in shock. Thanks everyone. This is ridiculous. There are lots of Australian flags, which is nice. The race really came to life for the last 15-20 laps.” “Hamilton had a problem and Rosberg was slow down the straights. I really struggled to get past Perez but managed to finally get a run out of the last chicane and get a nice run out of turn one and set my sights on Nico with couple of laps to go. I finally managed to get in the right spot to use DRS and it’s an amazing feeling right now,” said Ricciardo. Mercedes’ fine run of wins came to an end on a day in which they were targeting a record of six 1-2 victories, they were lucky not to end up with two DNFs, as by all accounts Rosberg did an outstanding job to keep the car going in the condition it was in. His efforts were rewarded with second place and a 22 points lead over his teammate in the world championship standings. Rosberg commented, “That was all over the place. There was so much going on. It’s disappointing because we want to win every race and we have the car to win every race. It was disappointing to have a problem like that but after everything to finish second in the end was OK. “We want to keep fighting, just as we did today. We owe that to the fans and will keep doing it. It’s so close and I don’t think it’s straining the cars. When the team sees it’s risking the cars they will jump in and make sure we bring them home. We need to make sure we get to the end of the race,” added Rosberg. Third placed Vettel made a great start, slotting into second place but relinquished that to Hamilton shortly after the safety car period ended. He nevertheless toiled hard all afternoon, losing out to teammate Ricciardo when the Australian opted for an early pitstop and then did enough to leap-frog the reigning world champion. Vettel reflected, “Congratulations to Daniel. It’s his day. We had a big help from Mercedes, unlike other weekends, but we were there to capitalise. It’s been a positive day. Daniel’s first win and a first win for Renault in the new era of engines. They have had a good comeback although there is still plenty of work ahead of us because Mercedes are quicker down the straight. But all in all it’s been a good day.” Everyone behind Vettel inherited two places at the expense of Massa and Perez. Invariably in races of high attrition Jenson Button rises to the occasion, and this time around it was no exception as the McLaren driver turned ninth on the grid into fourth place at the end of the day. “If you got caught in traffic it was difficult to overtake but I fought my way through in the end,” said Button. “The incident with Sergio and Felipe you don’t want to see but they are OK which is good and I had that little dice with Fernando [Alonso] and [Nico] Hulkenberg and went down the inside of both of them. It was a fun race and some reasonable points. In a straight-forward race we wouldn’t have finished fourth but I feel we are making progress with the car and the team should be happy.” Nico Hulkenberg salvaging some joy for Force India by finishing fifth on a one stop strategy. The German opting to start the race with the yellow band Pirelli soft tyres, and later bolting on the super softs but for some reason the latter tyres did not give him the extra edge one would have expected. Fernando Alonso finished sixth in the Ferrari, but the F14T did not give him options to attack and thus it was more of a case of gritting it out, which the Spaniard did while his teammate Kimi Raikkonen who finished tenth, struggled to the point that he spun at the slowest point of the track in the process. Valterri Bottas salvaged seventh place for Williams, the young Finn in the wars throughout the course of the afternoon. Jean Eric Vergne was eight in the Toro Rosso and McLaren rookie Kevin Magnussen crossed the line ninth. Kind Regards Shaky - Schumi |
