Rosberg leads penalised Hamilton home in Austria :
Nico Rosberg took his third grand prix victory of 2015 in Austria, comfortably beating team mate Lewis Hamilton. Rosberg overtook Hamilton as soon as the lights went out at the start of the race, and withstood mid-race pressure from his team mate as the pair made their single pit stops. The pit stop proved Hamilton’s undoing, as he crossed the line marking the pit exit. The stewards handed him a five-second penalty, making his goal of beating Rosberg even more difficult. Hamilton did not need to worry about losing his grip on second place as a slow pit stop took Sebastian Vettel out of contention. That promoted Felipe Massa, giving the Williams driver his first podium finish of the season. Valtteri Bottas had to pass Nico Hulkenberg twice as he led the Force India driver home for fifth as he too had a slow pit stop. Seventh placed changes hands in dramatic fashion in the dying moments of the race, as Pastor Maldonado swerved around Max Verstappen, fighting hard to keep his Lotus under control. Sergio Perez and Daniel Ricciardo completed the top ten. There were 14 cars still running at the end, but Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso weren’t among them as they collided heavily on the first lap. The McLaren ended up perched on top of the Ferrari, but both drivers were unhurt.

Qualifying Time : 1:08.455
Pole : Lewis Hamilton
Team Bat : Romain Grosjean > Pastor Maldonado
Grid Pos. C.Sainz jr. : 13th place

Mercedes pair spin their way to another front row :
No one other than Mercedes has started a race from pole position in the past 12 months – but the manner in which they achieved their latest front row lock-out was most unusual. Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg both spun off on their final laps in Q3. But with no one able to beat them they will start the race from first and second, Hamilton on pole position for the seventh time this year.
However Kimi Raikkonen will start near the back of the grid after failing to make it beyond the first part of qualifying.
Q1
Qualifying began on a damp but drying track and intermediate tyres were the order of the day for the drivers at first. However it quickly became clear the track would be quick enough for slick tyres by the end of the session. Williams initially took a punt on sending their drivers out on the soft tyres, but soon joined the rest in opting for the more aggressive super-soft compound. With the track improving with every passing lap, a frenzied battle to escape the clutches of the drop zone began. Rosberg hovered perilously close to the cut-off point to begin with but escaped the bottom five with time to spare. So did Sebastian Vettel – but not the other Ferrari of Raikkonen. He had fallen to 17th as the final laps began but lost time in the middle sector of the lap and headed for the pits. He was joined in elimination by Jenson Button, who had led the topsy-turvy session at one stage, and who now faces a penalty during the race as he will be unable to take much of his 25-place penalty. Fernando Alonso, who faces the same penalty, made it through in his McLaren. However Sergio Perez, who was running behind him on the track, fell at the first hurdle.
Q2
With the track now largely dry, Q2 was a more straightforward affair, and ended with the two Mercedes drivers on top. However Rosberg looked by far the more comfortable of the two, and his lap of 1’08.634 was a good four-tenths of a second faster than Hamilton could manage. The sole remaining Ferrari of Vettel was next, and two places behind him was another driver who reached Q3 after leaving his team mate behind in Q1: Nico Hulkenberg. Unsurprisingly it was Alonso who propped up the table at the end of Q2. Ahead of him Ricciardo lost out in a close three-way contest for 12th place. He also appeared to caused his team amte some aggravation, but it didn’t prevent Daniil Kvyat from reaching the final ten.
Q3
Only one Lotus driver had made it through to Q3 but his involvement didn’t last long. Romain Grosjean reported a problem with his car’s brake-by-wire system, and despite telling his team he felt he could continue he was told to head for the pits. The super-soft tyres were good for two flying runs at the beginning of the session, and after the first it seemed the status quo between the Mercedes drivers had been preserved – Rosberg was the best part of four-tenths of a second ahead. However on their second efforts Hamilton found the time he had been missing in the twisty middle sector, which moved him two-tenths of a second clear of his team mate. The scene was set for a climactic battle between the two Mercedes drivers – but it was decided in the most unusual of circumstances. Hamilton’s car got away from him at the very beginning of the lap – he spun off at turn one as he hit the brakes.
That seemed to leave to door open for Rosberg to snatch pole position. But he ran wide in the penultimate corner, then skidded off at the final turn, losing a clear shot at beating his team mate. Vettel did not quite have the pace to take advantage and had to settle for third place ahead of last year’s pole sitter Felipe Massa. Hulkenberg took fifth ahead of Bottas as the top six featured five Mercedes-powered cars.

Sebastian Vettel fastest in 3rd practice session before rain hits the track :
Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel was quickest in final Formula 1 practice for the Austrian Grand Prix, with rain mid-session preventing the leading teams from completing qualifying simulations. The four-time world champion clocked a 1m09.994 on the soft compound tyres, 0.017s quicker than Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton with Kimi Raikkonen third in the other Ferrari. With rain a distinct possibility for qualifying, several drivers went out on the full wet tyre when rain hit halfway through the session - although Hamilton was the only one of the frontrunners not to do so. A number were caught out by the slippery conditions, with Vettel running off track at Turn 2 before recovering while Toro Rosso's Carlos Sainz spun down at Turn 6. Hamilton and Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg traded times at the top of the timesheets in the early part of the session before Vettel usurped them both. Hamilton was on course to reclaim top spot, having clocked the fastest first and second sectors, but he ran wide after getting out of shape in the final corner.
Drivers were told rain was expected at the midpoint of the one-hour session, with Force India's Sergio Perez - who had a puncture that Pirelli said was rim-related early on - reacting immediately. The Mexican clocked the fourth fastest time on super-softs, but before Mercedes and Ferrari could get out on track on the softer tyre, McLaren's Fernando Alonso brought out the red flag when he stopped on the pit straight. As the marshals cleared Alonso's car, which is heavily upgraded this weekend but will incur a penalty of at least 20 places due to engine component changes, rain began to fall. Both Mercedes and Ferrari queued up at the end of the pitlane on the super-soft tyres, but by the time they headed out, the rain had intensified. Rosberg and Raikkonen skated off track but kept their respective cars out of the barriers before retreating back to the pits. Rosberg ended up fifth fastest, three tenths slower than team-mate Hamilton, ahead of the Williams' of Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas. Toro Rosso's Max Verstappen was eighth with Lotus drivers Pastor Maldonado and Romain Grosjean completing the top 10. Force India's Nico Hulkenberg - who said on Friday that it took him some time to get used to driving the car following his victory at Le Mans, was 11th with Sauber's Marcus Ericsson's 12th. Sainz was 13th, and was told by his engineer that he was the fastest car on the wet tyre in the closing stages, ahead of Red Bull's Daniil Kvyat and Alonso. Daniel Ricciardo had a quiet session in the other Red Bull, managing just 10 laps for 16th, but that was two more than Sauber's Felipe Nasr completed in 17th. McLaren's Jenson Button was 18th, with the Manor-run Marussias of Will Stevens and Roberto Merhi bringing up the rear.

Vettel fastest before gearbox trouble intervenes
Sebastian Vettel narrowly put Ferrari on top in the second practice session but suffered his second gearbox fault of the day soon afterwards. Vettel, who only did four laps in this morning’s practice session, beat Nico Rosberg to the top time by 11 thousandths of a second. However with just over 20 minutes remaining he was told to return to the pits as his car had lost gearbox oil. Kimi Raikkonen made it two Ferraris in the top three as championship leader Lewis Hamilton struggled to produce a flying lap on the super-soft tyres. After several errors Hamilton’s best time left him fifth, behind the Lotus of Pastor Maldonado. The Lotus driver went off at turn three shortly before the end of the session. The top ten was heavily populated with Mercedes-powered cars. The second Lotus of Romain Grosjean was seventh and both Force Indias were inside as well. However the two Williams cars were well down the order, which is not unusual for them on a Friday. Max Verstappen was the quickest Renault-powered runner in eighth place, but reported problems with his tyre performance dropping off on more than one occasion. It was another poor session for McLaren as both their drivers pulled into the pits and stopped running long before the chequered flag came out.

Mercedes quickest as problem halts Vettel
Mercedes set the pace in the first practice session for the Austrian Grand Prix, with only Ferrari able to get within one second of them.Nico Rosberg headed the times with a lap of 1’10.401 which he set in the opening half-hour of the session after a sustained run on the soft compound tyres. Team mate Lewis Hamilton was three-tenths of a second adrift after complaining of vibrations on his second set of Pirellis. Ferrari showed some encouraging pace with Kimi Raikkonen a further three-tenths of a second away from Hamilton. But the team’s other car only managed four laps before pulling over with a suspected gearbox problem. There were problems for the team in the pits as well: team principal Maurizio Arrivabene was almost struck by the Williams of Felipe Massa as he crossed the fast lane. McLaren also endured another troubled session. Fernando Alonso crawled back into the pits after his first run, and although he was able to return to the track later on he had to cope with very poor gear shifts. Jenson Button in the other car reported problems getting the tyres up to temperature. But he was far from the only driver with this problem as several runners struggled for grip in cool conditions on a track with little rubber laid down on it.Late in the session Valtteri Bottas took fourth place and Felipe Nasr put his Sauber a promising fifth.

Re: Formula 1 General Chat & Discussion

Austrian Grand Prix or Großer Preis Von Österreich - Spielberg(Styria) 19-20-21 june
Former A1 Ring, now renamed Red Bull Ring
The Grand Prix returned to the Formula One calendar in 2014 after 11 years absence
The modern and shortened circuit with its slower corners, has little in common with the old layout, used until 1987.

Podium 2014: Rosberg(Mercedes) – 2° Hamilton – 3° Bottas – 4° Massa – 5° Alonso
Fastest lap: Perez – pole position: Massa 1'08''759

Stats 2015 after seven races
Wins: Hamilton (4); Rosberg (2); Vettel(1)
Pole positions: Hamilton (6); Rosberg (1);
Fastest Lap: Hamilton(3); Raikkonen (2); Rosberg, and Ricciardo(1)
Podium: Hamilton and Rosberg (7); Vettel(5); Raikkonen and Bottas(1)
until now, always two Mercedes pilots on podium.
Pirelli has chosen for this Gran Prix the “Soft yellow” and “supersoft Red” as in Monaco and Montreal
Next Sunday with high temperature probably we will see two stops, whereas if it's cool maybe also one pit stop could be enough

Hamilton resists Rosberg for Canada win :
Lewis Hamilton took his fourth victory of the season in Canada, leading team mate Nico Rosberg in a Mercedes one-two. Rosberg kept in close touch with Hamilton in the second half of the race after their single pit stops, but never got close enough to make a bid for the lead. Valtteri Bottas put Williams on the podium for the first time this year after Kimi Raikkonen, who held the place in the opening stages, spun following his pit stop. Raikkonen crossed the line in fourth place ahead of the other Ferrari of Sebastian Vettel, which had started 18th. Felipe Massa also mounted a recovery effort having started 15th and moved up to sixth by the flag. The last car he passed was the Lotus of Pastor Maldonado, which finished seventh. Despite a spin while being passed by Vettel, Nico Hulkenberg finished eighth for Force India. Daniil Kvyat and Romain Grosjean completed the points scorers, the latter doing so despite a five second time penalty for hitting Will Stevens while lapping him. The other Manor of Roberto Merhi was one of three cars which failed to make the finish. The other were the two McLaren drivers, who suffered with a lack of straight-line speed and poor fuel consumption.
