[hidden image - please register]

"It wasn't like they had just fallen off," Northam told KABB-TV. "Both of us were kind of
heartbroken. We were just confused because we're new to the neighborhood.
We didn't know if somebody did it or what happened."

Northam said his attitude changed when neighbor Devin Rivera-Duque showed them video
she captured of the furry thieves. The video, which Rivera-Duque posted to YouTube, shows
two squirrels taking one of the small flags off its wooden stick and carrying it away.

"I saw her with the first flag," Rivera-Duque said. "I was just freaked out. The second and third flag,
I just started recording her." He said the squirrels used the 10 stolen flags to build a nest in a nearby tree.

Monkeys in Indonesia learning to ransom stolen goods for food ...

A group of monkeys living near an Indonesian temple have learned how to ransom
items stolen from tourists in exchange for food, researchers said.

[hidden image - please register]

The long-tailed macaques living near Uluwatu Temple on the island of Bali have long
been the subject of stories and YouTube videos alleging the monkeys steal items such
as glasses from tourists and return them only in exchange for food, leading Fany Brotcorne,
a primatologist at the University of Liege in Belgium, to study the phenomenon.

[hidden image - please register]

"It's a unique behavior. The Uluwatu Temple is the only place in Bali where it's found,"
Brotcorne told New Scientist. Brotcorne and her associates, who published their research
in the journal Primates, spent four months in 2010 observing the monkeys living near the temple.

The researchers found the two groups of macaques that spent the most time around tourists
had the highest rates of "robbing and bartering" behavior, indicating they may have learned
the ransoming technique from observing each other. [hidden link - please register]

The guardians of the Tower - Ravens of the Tower of London

‘If the ravens leave the Tower, the kingdom will fall…’

This group of at least six captive ravens which live at the Tower of London. Their presence is traditionally
believed to protect the Crown and the tower; a superstition holds that "if the Tower of London ravens are
lost or fly away, the Crown will fall and Britain with it".

[hidden image - please register]

Historically, wild ravens were common throughout Britain, even in towns, the tower being within their
natural range. When they were exterminated from much of their traditional range, including London,
they could only exist at the tower in captivity and with official support.

[hidden image - please register]

Local legend puts the origin of the captive raven population at the time of King Charles II (reigned 1660–85).
Some historians believe the "tower's raven mythology is likely to be a Victorian flight of fantasy".
Some of the ravens at the tower were specially bred in Somerset. According to folklore, wild
ravens are thought to have inhabited the Tower for many centuries, supposedly first attracted
there by the smell of the corpses of the executed enemies of the Crown.

[hidden image - please register]

These magnificent birds, large members of the genus Corvus, the crow family, respond only to the Raven Master
and should not be approached too closely by anyone else. The ravens preside over four different territories within
the Tower precincts. See if you can spot them on your visit.

but ended up following its brother into the river. The crocodile swims toward the big cats and attacks the smaller
lion, quickly dragging it under water.

The larger lion leaps onto the croc, causing it to lose its hold on the smaller feline, which quickly swims back toward shore.
The larger lion and crocodile thrash around in the water before disappearing out of view.

The filmer said the safari group initially feared the larger lion had been killed by the crocodile, but they soon spotted it climbing ashore on the other side of the river.

It took four years of lying on a riverbed for a photographer to capture this shot ...

This photo, shared on [hidden link - please register] yesterday, shows a hungry Eurasian beaver swimming with a poplar branch, on her way to feed her pups in western France’s Loire region.
Other people have taken photos of wet beavers before (this is the internet, after all), but this one is quite exceptional. And apparently, it was a tough shot for photographer Louis-Marie Preau to get.

[hidden image - please register]

It took four years to successfully capture this intimate scene. Each evening, wearing snorkeling gear and weights, he would lie motionless on the riverbed for two to
three hours. Finally, one evening, his patience paid off. Preau had only just plunged into the water and positioned himself when this adult returned with a freshly
harvested poplar branch to feed to its three young kits.

"I stopped to watch it and I just saw the cop running around his truck and I just stopped to

Wilkinson said. The department tweeted a video recorded from inside the SUV by Officer Alex Chase,
who declined to come to his partner's rescue during the pursuit.
