Digitalizing VHS Tapes - Can anyone help me out?

Hey there everyone.

So the last couple of days i thought about digitalizing my old VHS tapes, as i have a high stockpile of those and i want to make sure to save them. The only question is: How?

I hopped on to amazon and purchased an Audio / Video Grabber from CSL. The set-up is pretty easy, i hooked it up with the scat port and put the grabber in the USB port from my Laptop, installed the drivers and the recording software that came along with it called "honestech VHS to DVD 2.0."
I made sure to update the program and the drivers, as well. That whole part went smooth, no issues. The only problem is, that the program doesn't give me a signal. No video and no audio, not even when i adjust the settings to NTSC or PAL (living in germany, btw.)
So i tried another software called "Debut Video Capture Software" which has a built-in option to record from external devices. When i tried that program, it said that it didn't find any external devices in the usb ports.

I now purchased another grabber for a little bit more money that comes with all necessary cables and stuff (maybe the ones i used are not really compatible?) and see how that works.

Before it arrives though and just in case that grabber also doesn't work, i wanna know if u guys have any suggestions in terms of hard- / and software to use. Hooking up all the stuff isn't a problem for me, finding the right hard- and software however, is, because there are just too many options to choose from. So if u have digitalized your vhs' before, please let me know your set up and the programs u've used, could be a good reference point for everyone who also wants to try it out in the future.

Thanks in advance =)

I would love to be able to also reach a solution in how to transfer my recording to my laptop. I hope to one day be able to share these long lost recordings of great shows to the forum in which we will never see the likes of again. I also have recordings stored on my previous SKY+ Box, again its a complicated procedure in how to shift these recordings onto the my laptop too.

I might be able to help, because i actually figured out today how to do it =D

So here's the thing:
I purchased this right here: [hidden link - please register]
(couldn't find the usa amazon page, i'm from germany and this is what i bought, should be available in other countries, as well)

It comes with a CD with a built-in recording program called "VHS to DVD 2.0." U just have to run the cd, install the drivers and the program.
It comes with a SCART box and 3 (it only shows 2 for some reason) but 3 "female" and "male" Cinch cables. U just have to plug the scart box in the back of your VHS recorder, connect the white, red and yellow cinch cables, connect the grabber with your PC / Laptop via USB, run the program and you're ready to go.
That's how it works via cinch cables to the SCART box, but it also comes with a plug that u can directly insert into your TV, as well.

The problem i had, was that the SCART box i was using was too busted. I tried out the new one that came with this package and it worked like a charm. I read that some people have issues with the sound, but it works perfectly for me.

I gotta say, this whole package is definitely worth the price, it's only 13€ after all.
If u wanna see the quality that u can get out of this; here u go:

Be aware though, that the raw quality is a tad better, i had to run it through 2 other programs, but that's just to minimize the size of the file and i had to cut it a bit.

First off, thanks for all the replies so far, guys

you need a skart socket that has three white, yellow and red coloured male cables, the skart socket should be inserted into the video recorder (VHS), the three male cables must be inserted into the three female cables colored in white, yellow and red which are given in and ending with a USB that must be inserted into the PC. Provided you also have a CD to install the program on your PC. The program should already be ready for playback, if not so you have to open the screen and change the parameters, to do this you have a sheet that explains how you have to do. First start the program then the video recorder.

That's exactly what i did, i connected all the wires to the socket, connected it via usb, program and drivers run fine (i have 2 laptops, i tried it on both, one runs windows 7, one runs windows 10) only problem is i just get a blackscreen on Honestech TVR 2.5, which is the program i currently use. I know i have to change the parameters to PAL, since i'm in germany, but since that didn't work out, i switched it to NTSC, because there are some issues regarding NTSC, that the screen comes out in black and white. I tried that, same result as with PAL; blackscreen

As i've stated though, i will try another grabber, should arrive some time tomorrow, that also comes with all the necessary wires and the socket, perfectly fit for the grabber and i'll see if that works out.

If it doesn't work, i thought about purchasing this:

This looks like it would work flawlessy, as it runs as a seperate device

I looked up some videos before i purchased it on youtube and for them, at least, it worked with no issues.
