It began last Tuesday

Re: News from the World

Former Spanish athlete Yago Lamela was found dead at his home in northern Spain.
The 36-year-old long jumper won the 1999 World Championship silver in Seville and then won at the 2003 World Championship in Paris, reports Xinhua.
Lamela also won a string of indoor medals, including a 1999 Indoor World Championships silver in Maebashi and another 2003 Indoor World silver in Birmingham along with a 2002 European Indoor Championship silver. His jump of 8.56 metres in Maebashi held the European Indoor record for 10 years before it was finally broken by Sebastian Bayer.
However, after those successes, Lamela began to suffer a series of injuries in his Achilles tendon. These problems stopped him competing at the 2004 Athens Olympics and forced his eventual retirement in 2009.
Lamala suffered from bouts of depression and was hospitalised as a result of psychiatric problems.

Cuban musician Juan Formell of Los Van Van dies.

Cuban musician Juan Formell, who for more than four decades was the driving force behind the big band salsa orchestra Los Van Van, died Thursday. He was 71.
"My life has been entirely dedicated to music and only makes sense when people make it theirs and enjoy it," he said upon receiving the award last year.
Born Juan Climaco Formell Cortina on Aug. 2, 1942, he was a band director, bassist, composer, singer and producer over the course of his long career.
Slender and quick to smile, Formell first learned music at the feet of his father, Francisco, a flautist and pianist.
As a young man he joined various important musical groups, collaborating with Guillermo Rubalcaba, Carlos Faxas' orchestra and the Reve group in 1967, where he made significant contributions such as the use of the electric bass and keyboards.
In 1969, he created Los Van Van, which became Cuba's most famous big band orchestra and whose danceable tunes attracted a wide following on the island and overseas.
The lyrics of his songs told the social history of the island and reflected Cubans' joys and concerns, always with a sense of humor and a picaresque touch.
Formell also set poems by the poet Nicolas Guillen to music and composed scores for the theater and cinema.
Many Cuban big bands that followed were heavily influenced by his sound.

Nigel Stepney, former Chief Mechanic, then Race and Test Technical Manager of Ferrari, was tragically killed today
in a road traffic crash in England at the age of 56 CryCryCry
Police reports that a truck ran over him, while he was parking his van.
He began his career in Formula 1 as a mechanic in Shadow in 1977, then moved to Lotus, Benetton (late 1980s and
early 1990s) and finally to Scuderia Ferrari with Michael Schumacher, Rory Byrne and Ross Brawn.
In 2000 he was injured in Spanish GP during a pit-stop of Schumacher' s car and in February 2007 he was promoted Head of the
performance development in Ferrari, but in July he was dismissed, due to the 2007 Formula 1 espionage controversy.
In 2010 he was sentenced to 20 months in prison and handed a € 600 fine for his part in the spy affair, but the sentence was
reportedly reduced after he entered a plea bargain.
My condolences to his family and friends, may he rest in peace CryCryCry

Italian designers Dolce and Gabbana sentenced to 18 months in prison for tax evasion despite the PROSECUTION saying they should be acquitted.

Fashion designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have each been sentenced to 18-month jail terms for tax evasion charges - despite the prosecution arguing for the pair to be acquitted.
Italy's appeals court upheld a verdict issued last June against the pair on charges of using Luxembourg holding company Gado to avoid paying taxes on royalties of about 1billion euros (£820million).
In court yesterday, the pair were each given suspended sentences of 18 months in jail - reduced from 20 months because of statute of limitations applied to certain facts in the case.

Twin blasts hit India express train.

One woman has been killed and nine others injured in a bomb attack aboard a train at a station in the southern Indian city of Chennai, officials say.
Explosions were reported in two carriages of the train, which was travelling from Bangalore in the south to Guwahati in the north-east.
The incident happened minutes after the express train arrived at the station.
Officials told BBC Hindi that the explosions were "low intensity" and took place under passenger seats.
The blasts come in the middle of India's staggered general election, but officials say they cannot confirm if the two events are linked.
Some Indian television channels are speculating about who may have been behind the attack, but the authorities say they are keeping an open mind, says the BBC's Andrew North.
