Help needed to get Hotbird channels back

Can someone explain what's happened to Hotbird over the last 8 months or so. I have a Technomate TM-5500 and when I used to scan for fta/scrambled channels on hotbird, I used to get somewhere in the region of 870 channels, now when I scan I get less than half that amount.

Also, I would really like to get back a couple of channels that don't even show up in the listings any more. I'm missing Arte, TV Polonia and TV Kultura.

Please don't link me to one of these sat guides, because I find them very confusing and manually tuning in from the frequencies they provide hardly ever seems to work anyway.

Is there any simple steps I can take to get these three channels back in my listings?

Thanks in advance.

My RX?

I liked Arte for their occasional controversial programming, but not enough to start shelling out money.

Re: Help needed to get Hotbird channels back

Thanks very much to everyone for their continued help.

So now it looks like the issue has been resolved - an incompatible/out-of-date receiver.

At least now I know - it was the not knowing that was frustrating me.

Thanks again.

Yes, it's very likeable TM-550 is not compatible with mpeg4; I put the frequency for the SD channel since I didn't see it in throughout this thread. If a specific search on that frequency give no result...
I don't think instead it have much to do with the LNB: my one is 15 years old (and was a cheap one even then...) and works perfectly with HD channels.
Since ARTE switched to mpeg4 even with its SD channel, this ought to be the issue, as you say.

and having now googled you will not get a HDTV station to work on a Technomate TM-5500 it is an SD only receiver, times change, sorry

Arte on HotBird is available in both HD and SD; the SD version is on 11623 V

Translation from [hidden link - please register] ...
"On the satellite Hotbird 6, ARTE broadcast standard changes its signal on standard plain (MPEG2-> MPEG4 ) and proposes a new French HD channel.
Since November 29, 2011, the French ARTE signal is transmitted in plain text in the MPEG-4 instead of MPEG-2.
To continue to receive ARTE clear from this neighborhood, it must therefore be equipped with a satellite receiver MPEG-4.
The geographical area covered by this new distribution does not change compared to the previous situation and broadly covers the European countries and the three Maghreb countries.
The transmission frequency remains unchanged for broadcast in SD:-
156 Repeater, Frequency 11623 V, DVB-S/MPEG-4 Flow Symbols 27500, FEC ¾"

I feel that it's the MPEG-4 which is giving the problem ...

It's in French with no English option.

Anyway, are you saying that I can't tune it in because it's in mpeg4? What does that mean, exactly?

I am only guessing here. mpeg4 is HDTV I think a non HD compatible LNB is the problem. I have experienced difficulties the other way round i.e compatible LNB which sent the receiver a signal it could not cope with, the TV tried to build an image far too big and then nothing, so I figure for HD reception take a look at 1st the LNB and 2nd the receiver, the signal is there for sure.

On Hotbird - that's where my dish is pointed. When you said "Arte Astra19.2 :11934V 27500 and 11744h 22000 Hot Bird Arte no .Checked ProgDVB." I thought you were saying Arte is on Astra at 11934 and on Hotbird at 11744, but maybe I read it wrong. In any case, I'm not sure what you mean at the end when you say "Arte no .Checked ProgDVB." ??

Just to clear up, I've manually searched for Arte France on both frequencies that come up on these sat guide sites, but no matter how I search it won't find it.

Thanks, Shirtfull, but those are just the instructions for manual tuning and I already know how to do that.

I was quite hopeful when I read this as it's a frequency I hadn't seen until now, but it's not finding any channels at all under those settings.
