GP Europa - Valencia (street circuit). it will be the 5th edition on this circuit.
Since 2008, the Grand Prix of Europe is held in Valencia. Good place, spectacular location but the track layout designed by Tilke is quite boring. Valencia Street Circuit is a mix of straights, low speed chicanes and hairpins. It is particularly demanding on the brakes with several heavy braking zones; the track is very wide along its entire length. There are 25 corners in total and the circuit passes across a swing bridge which is kept closed during the whole the Grand Prix weekend. As a street circuit, initially the grip will be minimal. However the track will gradually evolve, becoming faster day by day. It's one of the fastest street circuits of the season, but overtakings are very difficult and probably the only chance will be using the DRS. I do not like the DRS because I think it's an unsportsmanlike system, but unfortunately with these cars is necessary. The overtakings on the DRS zone are artificial and often do not leave any chance to the opponent. Moreover this system could become even dangerous, in case of failure. Now aerodynamics (downforce) and tyres are too important, and above all in this season, Pirelli tyres are the key to win or lose the races. In Canada, the Ferrari team did a wrong strategy. When Hamilton did his second pit stop, they took a risk, but only in the following laps, it became clear that was a mistake. Alonso changed his tires on lap 19 (from supersoft-red to sotf-yellow) and did not stop again until the finish line. Instead the same strategy(only one pit stop) was right for Grossjean (he changed from supersoft to soft tires on lap 21). Probably a different tire wear between Ferrari and Lotus, or perhaps the Lotus was able to keep the tyres in the right temperature(a narrow window of a few degrees), while in the final laps Alonso had a great tyre degradation. DRS: unlike last year, next Sunday there will be only one zone between turns 11 and 12. Soft (option, yellow) and medium(prime, white) will be the tyres used in Valencia Podium 2010: Vettel – Hamilton – Button –fastest lap on race: Button – pole position : Vettel 1'37''587 Podium 2011: Vettel – Alonso – Webber – fastest lap on race: Vettel – pole position : Vettel 1'36'975 in the previous four editions Hamilton arrived in second place, three times(2008-2009-2010) in the last two editions always Vettel pole position and win. |
