The 1st practice session has just ended ,here is the result of it :
Vettel pips Massa in first practice session : Sebastian Vettel began his championship defence by leading the first practice session of 2013 – but Ferrari weren’t far behind. After the first 90 minutes of practice for the Australian Grand Prix Felipe Massa was just 0.078s slower than the Red Bull driver, with team mate Fernando Alonso third. Lewis Hamilton was fourth-fastest on his first appearance for Mercedes. The first half-hour of the session saw little running as the drivers preferred to keep an eye on track conditions and wait for their rivals to make a move. Toro Rosso blinked first, sending Daniel Ricciardo out for a run. His team mate soon joined him followed by the Caterhams and Marussias. Kimi Raikkonen was among the first of the front-runners to do a stint, lowering the best to a 1’27.877. The Mercedes pair got close to the time but Fernando Alonso was the first to beat it, improving on the Lotus’s mark by two tenths of a second. That left Vettel as the only driver yet to set a time. With half an hour to go he duly took the top spot off the Ferrari, despite running wide at turn six. Felipe Massa briefly reclaimed the top time but Vettel took it back with his next effort. Now it was Massa’s turn to make an error at turn four, In the latter stages of the session several drivers were clearly struggling for grip. Mark Webber reported his tyres were gone towards the end of the session and Ricciardo was having trouble with tyre vibrations. Giedo van der Garde ran wide at turn one and more than one driver got onto the dirt at the exit of turn five. Jules Bianchi out-braked himself at turn three. With two minutes to go Paul di Resta spun off at turn six but managed to extract his Force India from the gravel trap and get back on the track. 1: Sebastian Vettel : Red Bull : 1’27.211 laps 16 2: Felipe Massa : Ferrari : 1’27.289 +0.078 laps 17 3: Fernando Alonso : Ferrari : 1’27.547 + 0.336 laps 16 4: Lewis Hamilton : Mercedes : 1’27.552 + 0.341 laps 18 5 :Mark Webber : Red Bull :1’27.668 + 0.457 laps 18 6 :Kimi Raikkonen : Lotus : 1’27.877 + 0.666 laps 17 7: Nico Rosberg : Mercedes : 1’28.013 + 0.802 laps 17 8: Adrian Sutil :Force India : 1’28.426 + 1.215 laps 19 9: Jenson Button : McLaren : 1’28.440 + 1.229 laps 19 10: Romain Grosjean : Lotus : 1’28.520 + 1.309 laps 15 11: Sergio Perez : McLaren : 1’28.597 + 1.386 laps 19 12: Nico Hulkenberg : Sauber : 1’28.786 + 1.575 laps 19 13: Paul di Resta : Force India : 1’28.910 + 1.699 laps 18 14: Pastor Maldonado : Williams : 1’29.443 + 2.232 laps 20 15: Valtteri Bottas : Williams : 1’29.928 + 2.717 laps 19 16: Esteban Gutierrez : Sauber : 1’30.203 + 2.992 laps 17 17:Jean-Eric Vergne : Toro Rosso : 1’30.729 + 3.518 laps 17 18: Daniel Ricciardo : Toro Rosso :1’30.969 + 3.758 laps 19 19: Jules Bianchi : Marussia : 1’31.263 + 4.052 laps 24 20: Max Chilton : Marussia : 1’32.176 + 4.965 laps 23 21: Charles Pic : Caterham : 1’32.274 + 5.063 laps 21 22: Giedo van der Garde : Caterham :1’32.388 + 5.177 laps 18 2nd practice session starts at 06.30u ! the Melbourne Grand Prix takes place on a street circuit but a bit unusual, because the average speed in qualifying is more than 220 km, and there are some run-off area large enough. Traction and braking are important here. Two t DRS zones, during practice qualifying and race. Tyre: Supersoft and Medium.
Here only a podium for Ferrari(3° place)in the last five years Winner (last 5 editions) 2008 L Hamilton – McLaren Mercedes 2009 J Button – Brawn Mercedes 2010 J Button – McLaren Mercedes 2011 S Vettel – Red Bull Renault 2012 J Button–; McLaren Mercedes Pole position: (last 5 editions) 2008 L Hamilton – McLaren Mercedes 2009 J Button – Brawn Mercedes 2010 S Vettel – Red Bull Renault pole time 1m 23.919 – first free practice 1m 26.927 (gap: 3.008) 2011 S Vettel – Red Bull Renault pole time 1m 23.529 – first free practice 1m 26.831 (gap: 3.302) 2012 L Hamilton – McLaren Mercedes pole time 1m 24.922 first free practice 1m 27.560 (gap: 2.638) the gap is the improvement between the first free practice session on Friday morning and pole position in the same year. So after the practice session on Friday morning it will be possible to have a first idea on the pole time. much more interesting would be the comparison between the third free practice and the pole position 2010 (gap 0.800) 2011 (gap: 0.978) 2012(gap: 0,759) Of course, the comparison is only possible in dry conditions. good championship to pilots and teams and good luck to everyone for the game here. Best regards. |

some remarks after the preseason tests and before the first race on 17 March
F1 cars are faster than last year; maybe it was recovered the gap created at the end of the 2011 season. For example: pole position at Bercellona GP 2012: Hamilton 1m21.707(but canceled due to a mistake of his team). Preseason tests 2013: best lap time Rosberg 1m20.130. The improvement was more than 1.5 seconds Red Bull: Vettel and Webber have hidden the real potential of RB9 - E 'unthinkable that the two Red Bull drivers(Vettel 1.22.5 and Webber 1.22.6) are only 0.6 seconds faster than Caterham (Charles Pic - 1.23.1) and Marussia (Jules Bianchi - 1.23.1). But in last week in Barcelona, there were some difficulties. small details or something more? Mc Laren: more or less the same thing even if Button closed the tests in fifth position. Perhaps with the new pull rod suspension, engineers and mechanics are faced with different problems, but the first GP is at Melbourne(Albert Park); usually a favorable track for Mc Laren. (3 wins in the last five years), and Button(first in 2009-2010 and 2012) Ferrari: for sure better than 2012. The new F138 seems fast on a single lap and consistent in the long run, but Ferrari was behind in the final races of 2012. I hope they have recovered at least a large part of the gap; it would be very important to start from a good position on the grid. Mercedes: Rosberg and Hamilton have been fast in Barcelona. Very well over a single lap, but also a good long-run pace. Maybe the new W04 will be close to the front row for qualifying in Melbourne. However will be important to understand if they have solved the big problem of the last year: tire wear and their right use, during the race. During the preseason tests, a big issue for all the teams has been the high degradation with Pirelli’s new tyres. At Melbourne, probably we will see a lot of pit stop, also because it will brought the supersoft compound (red stripe) together with the medium (white stripe). Perhaps a bit risky choice. Last year had been brought soft tyres(yellow) and medium (white). One last note: two DRS zones for every circuit except for Monaco and Suzuka in 2013. More drs during the race and less drs during practice and qualifying. |
