2018 AUSTRALIAN OPEN - DAY 13 :

Women' s Singles : Caroline Wozniacki (2) won her 28th WTA tournament in career (first Grand Slam), defeating
Simona Halep (1) 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-4 after 2h 49'

Wozniacki started the match better, thanks to a break in the second game (3-0). Solid and determined the Danish defended the advantage without giving a chance to Halep, a little contracted until the ninth game (after being forward 5-2 and have come two points from the set). Here suddenly the arm of the 27 year old from Odense shook and three break chances for the Romanian came together : Wozniacki saved the first two but not the third. Shortly after Simona reached the 5-5 Caroline recovered almost immediately and the set was decided at the tie-break, the first ever between these two players : Wozniacki ended up dominating it 7 points to 2 after 52'; in the second set Halep was still in trouble, forced in a very long third game (18 points) and saving four break-points, then, on 3-2, the Romanian asked for a medical time out, due to pressure problems; at the restart Simona tried to shorten the rallies as much as possible and in the eighth game a straight on the line forehand gave the break to Halep and in the next one the 26 year old from Costanta equalized the set count at the fourth opportunity after 49', with another long game of 14 points. After a break of 10 minutes (heat rule), at the resumption of the match Caroline had to recover from 0-30 on her service but then in the second game broke Simona, too often forced to rely on the second service (2-0). With a deadly third game of 18 points Halep recovered the break of disadvantage at the sixth useful ball (with the opponent who in turn has failed two for 3-0). In the fourth game another break for the Danish, who went to lead 3-1. But Halep, back again to hit strongly, especially backhand, recovered immediately on 3-3. Caroline seemed suddenly very tired, but also terrified by the idea of ​​failing again : Simona took advantage of the many mistakes of the 27 year old with her third game in a row, going to lead 4-3. This time it was Wozniacki who asked for the trainer' s intervention due to a problem with her left hamstring. At the restart there was another break, with Caroline that managed to move forward (5-4), then, in the most important service game of the match Simona committed her first double fault, with Caroline earning a match-point by winning the most incredible rally of the match and shortly after a backhand on the net of Halep gave Wozniacki the most beautiful evening of her career, with her first Slam trophy and the return to world' s N° 1 spot, 6 years after her last time, while for Halep the Slam taboo continues, with her third final lost (two at Roland Garros).
