Re: Track and Field: Michael Johnson - The tribute.

Michael Duane Johnson ( Dallas , 13 September 1967 ) is a former athlete U.S. , considered the largest four hundred of the time.
He holds world records in the 400 meter dash (43 "18) and the relay 4 x 400 meters (2'54 "20, as part of Team USA) for 12 years has held the world record of 200 meters , passed in 2008 by Usain Bolt , and the world record in the 400 meters indoors with 44 "63, then beaten by Kerron Clement .
He won four Olympic gold medals and was eight times world champion. It was the first man in history to win the 200 and 400 meters in the same Olympics , that of 1996 , instead of two women who have accomplished this feat: Valerie Brisco-Hooks in 1984 and Marie-Jose Perec in 1996 .
Born and raised in Dallas ( Texas ), Michael Johnson was the youngest of five brothers. He attended Baylor University , where he was coached by Clyde Hart won several titles and NCAA .
Johnson had a unique running style, characterized by erect, head high, walk shorts and little movement of the arms (which earned him several nicknames including "tin soldier" and " Forrest Gump ")
After having had to give up because of physical problems with the 1988 Olympics , the first great success in the world came in 1991 when Johnson won the title in the 200 meters at the World Championships in Tokyo, with a time of 20 "01. He its Olympic debut at the 1992 Games , however, failing to qualify for the final 200 meters, due to food poisoning. It took a partial revenge winning gold as part of the 4 × 400 m relay team, which also established a new world record with a time of 2'55 "74.
After the disappointment at the failure of the final 200 meters to the Olympics, Johnson won the 400 meters at the World Championships in Stuttgart of 1993 , this victory came later added a second gold in relay 4 × 400 m, on this occasion by establishing the primacy world with 2'54 "29.
In 1995, the next World Championships in Gothenburg in Sweden , Johnson won his first "double" in a big event, it won both the 200 and 400 meters, adding a new gold medals at these as part of the 4x400 relay team m
The following year, Johnson lowered his world record of 200 meters historic Italian Pietro Mennea , bringing to 19 "66 during the National Championships USA . With this performance he qualified for the Olympic Games in Atlanta , preparing the company "impossible" to win for the first time the title is that of the 200 of the 400 meters, company ever succeeded so far to any male athlete in Olympic history.
The July 29 easily won the title of the 400 meters with a time of 43 "49 seconds, nearly a second Briton Roger Black and a "04 the Ugandan Davis Kamoga . On 1 August , in the 200m final, Johnson ran the first 100 meters in 10 "12 and ran through the second fraction over time stratospheric 9" 20, and finished the race with a time of 19 "32 amazing new record the world lasted 12 years and 19 days in the race reached the average speed of 37 km / h. This was the biggest improvement of the records of the 200 meters in all of history, comparable perhaps only to the rest of athletics in the long jump by Bob Beamon at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico .
At the beginning of 1997 Johnson was injured during a race with Donovan Bailey on the unusual distance of 150 meters, which included a prize of one million dollars for the winner, however, succeeded in the same year to win his third world title at 400 meters but declined to defend his title on the 200. Two months after Michael Johnson beat Maurice Greene and Donovan Bailey himself in a race won the 200 meters with a time of 19 "84, thus confirming the athlete faster even on this distance.
1999-2000: the record of 400 meters and the last Olympic title
In 1998 he suffered a new injury the following season and his preparation for the World Championships in Seville was reduced to only four 400-meter races, due to additional physical problems, if it were not for the policy of the IAAF to admit automatically the World Cup title holders, would not even go to Seville because it had exceeded the trials U.S. due to injury. He recovered in time from physical problems as well and won his fourth world title in the 400 meters with the new world record of 43 "18 seconds. Then ran as the last baton in the 4 × 400, then adding gold to his collection the ninth world.

Johnson during the final of the 400, but Sydney 2000 .
He finished his career at the Sydney Olympic Games by winning the 400 meters and 4 x 400 relay team and bringing the total of his five Olympic gold medals. In 2003 it was revealed that Jerome Young was allowed to participate in the Olympic Games Sydney, where he ran in preliminary rounds of the 4 × 400, although he was tested positive to steroids in a doping test in 1999 . An appeals court of the USA Track & Field had rejected the decision of the expert organization of doping, allowing Young, despite the positive, to participate.
On 18 July 2004 the IAAF ruled that Young was not eligible to take part in the Olympic Games and decided to annul the results of the athlete the United States, including those of the relay. With this decision, the U.S. was disqualified by the order of arrival of the 4x400 meters in Sydney and the gold was handed over to the second national ranking, the Nigeria followed by Jamaica and Bahamas . On 22 July 2005, the Court of Arbitration for Sport to Lausanne overturned the decision of the IAAF and re-established the original order of arrival.
In June 2007 , Antonio Pettigrew, one of the four members of that relay team admitted to having used performance-enhancing drugs and decided to return his gold medal. Following the confession of his relay team-mate Johnson also claimed to want to return this medal , declaring that the gold did not belong.
In 2008 the IOC decided to officially deny the U.S. of the 2000 Olympic title in the 4x400 relay team, making the title vacant and postponing a reallocation of the medals in the future. [10] The U.S. team was also on the private decision of ' USADA (U.S. Anti agency -doping), which blotted out all the results obtained from Pettigrew since January 1997, the gold medal in the 4x400 relay team at the World Championships in 1999. The world golds won by Johnson, because of this ban, it came down to eight .
Johnson has run 22 times a time under 44 seconds in the 400-meter races. 200 dropped 17 times in under 20 seconds and 6 times in 19 "80. He also holds the world record distance of atypical 300 meters with a time of 30 "85 (the previous record was 31" 48) and has held the world record in the 200 meters by June 1996 through August 2008, when it was improved by Jamaican Usain Bolt .
Michael Johnson has remained for most of the '90s almost stumbled on the long sprints. After retiring, he was often invited to TV shows as an expert in athletics and is the agent of the new rising star in the 400 meters, the white American Jeremy Wariner .
