Re: UEFA EURO 2016 - Discussion & Chat

I have to say I'm somewhat curious as to why this Thread is titled Discussion & Chat yet very few comments or opinions have been posted with regards to the games or the off field politics. I ofcourse thank Italianfan for keeping us updated with the scores and groups etc,,,,,,,that goes without saying ofcourse Thumb up

The big news is obviously this one.

Euro 2016: Russia given suspended disqualification

Disgraceful scenes and very sad to see this tournament being overshadowed by such horrible events taking football all the way back to the dark days of the 80's Confused

With regards to the matches so far I've been somewhat disappointed, far too many so called big name stars are clearly under performing and too many teams I feel are basically putting too much emphasis on defending. I want to see more flair and more goals. Just my opinions so far on the competition, anybody else have an opinion on the games etc then please feel free to post away afterall its good to talk! Thumb up

Re: UEFA EURO 2016 - Discussion & Chat

With regards to the antics of the English and Russian supporters I'd like to say that I am shocked by it but to be frank I'm not. I expected this to happen from the moment I seen they'd be playing each other, I knew they'd be trouble, it was only a question of damage limitation as far as I was concerned. The heated atmosphere in the ground I even picked up on from watching the game on the telly last night.

With regards to how the UK police tried in vain to stop the hooligans travelling to France it was ultimately an impossible job, France is practically next door to England and even if fans were turned away from taking a direct flight or ferry across there is other means in which to bypass all of this. Get a ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam or a flight to Spain, its not rocket science, all they need to do is take a detour onroute to France.

The Russians are infamous for having hooligans. Back in 2012 my Dundee United team were drawn again Dynamo Moscow and no sooner had the whistle blown for start of play that I looked across from another stand and witnessed this Thumb down

With regards to the tournment itself I've already seen some wonderful games, great to see the Welsh notch up 3 points and taking away the obvious off field issues the England v Russia game was a great spectacle and how England must be kicking themselves to throw away all 3 points in the dying seconds of a game which they should have won but as they say in football if you don't take your chances then it can all come back to haunt you and this is exactly what happened with England.

Just finished watching the Northern Ireland v Poland game and it was arguably the worst game of football I've seen so far in this tournament. Here we had Poland attacking for the majority of the match with the Ulster men being quite happy to stay camped hoping for a point but they got what they deserved in the end, absolutely nothing. Negative football gains no support from me so all credit to the men from Poland eventually getting the winner;

So as a Scotsman which team do I support, I don't have any strong feelings for any of the nations if truth be known, I'm gutted that Scotland aren't there to participate so my only support goes to the team which plays the best football which deserves to win the competition. After watching Northern Ireland I'll cross them off my list straight away.

Re: UEFA EURO 2016 - Discussion & Chat

As an Englishman, I'm absolutely appalled at the scenes in Marseille before and after the match. Some of the images are as if they were from a war zone.
It appears that most of the violence inside the Stade Velodrome was started by the Russian fans (who came prepared for trouble) but there's no excuse for English 'fans' singing songs like "No Surrender to the IRA" or "Ten German Bombers" which are as outdated as they are pathetic. Chants of "ISIS where are you?" were also heard according to reports. No wonder locals got angry. Still, it gave the England hooligans an excuse to paint themselves as the victims. As for Russia, there's already a case for throwing them out after what happened in Euro 2012. The ultimate sanction would be to strip them of the 2018 World Cup.

On the field, I'm actually supporting Wales in this tournament (principally because there are three Palace players in their squad). They were fantastic yesterday in the win over Slovakia. How Martin Skrtel avoided a red card for his assault on Jonny Williams in the penalty area. I'll never know.
England actually played quite well against Russia but paid the price for not taking their chances earlier on.

This afternoon sees Poland take on Northern Ireland and my loyalties are split on this one: Poland being my adoptive home country but Northern Ireland's team are in a major tournament for the first time in 30 years, and it's a great story. Let's hope they both get out of the group.
