Re: News from the World

Sure, the last months, 2016 overall has been a horrible year and one of the worst years in a long time. Feels even worse to me than 2001. The Syrian war with thousands & thousands of fatalities, the refugee crisis, ISIS, hate-filled terror attacks in Europe & Turkey killing hundreds of innocent people. Putin creating a dangerous chaos again and playing russian roulette with ghosts from a dark past. More than 300 people killed in massive earthquakes in Italy, 100000 people there made temporarily homeless and a train crash killed 25 people in Puglia. A terrible, terrible year...

We have also lost so many of our great ones in 2016. David Bowie, Alan Rickman, Carrie Fisher, Debbie Reynolds, Gene Wilder, George Kennedy, Prince and many, many more. The world is less with them. Sadly the long list also includes Leonard Cohen. I'm a big fan and admirer of him since I was only 11 or 12 years old. A fantastic artist & musican and one of the greatest songwriters of all time. When I was younger I went to a lot of concerts of my favourite musicians. A lot when I was younger, but only a very few when I crossed the "30". Over the years Leonard gave a couple of concerts in Austria and finally I decided to go to the concert he gave in Vienna 2013. Today I'm really glad I did. It's not only the music, it's the man. Six decades of continuous success but stayed a modest, nice and friendly person all his life. A gentle human being and his music will stay with us forever.

Don't wanna even comment on the ridiculous/dangerous figure of Donald Trump being the next President of the United States, but there are some nasty parellels between Trump and the politicians on our side of the world. There's the rise of far right parties in some countries and there are imho undoubtedly a couple of complete nutjobs amongst them. In the past the voters selected them out very quickly and that seems to have changed in the last years. Today we have politicians who seem to be almost pathological liars and they seem to get away with it easily. The austrian freedom party - every heard of them? - is full of them. Whenever they open their mouth lies, lies again and in the best case half-truths are the result. They would have no idea or concepts what to do when they would ever get any governmental responsibility. It would end in tears and disaster. I absolutely detest them and never want to seem them in power. Sadly lots of people seem to fall for simple slogans and what really baffles me - even when they know that they are being sold a bunch of lies they still vote for them.

"When you put the interests of your party before your country, the result is a catastrophe.” That is a quote from spanish foreign minister José Manuel García-Margallo and imho says it all. In my opinion in todays world cooperation, building bridges and not isolation is the answer. For a long time I thought we have learned that, but apparantly not. The next years will be a bumpy road for all of us I guess, but sooner or later people will come to their senses and act and vote in their own and best interest and from then on things will change for the better again...

The so called mainstream parties are ripping the heart and soul right out of our country and depraving us of values such as freedom and more importantly privacy as the latest Snoopers Charter bill which got passed here recently in the UK

Sorry, because I'm sure that will annoy some people again, but that would be at least one thing the reincarnation of Margaret Thatcher and her snooty posh tories would have achieved this year and on the actual issue: The european court of justice has already declared the UK snooper charter as illegal. This could make an interesting legal challenge for the next two years, but in this context I interpret it as a hint of what the answer to Barniers second question in the negotiations could be...

Re: News from the World

I just want to say one thing, politicians no longer listen to what Joe Bloggs on the street has to say anymore hence the reason we are entering a new era of radical men and potential parties getting into power. To be honest a UKIP victory in the next UK General Election to me looks more likely than ever.

Elsewhere some very sad news today in the UK as former England Manager Graham Taylor has passed away. One of footballs more colourful characters with many amusing quotes to his name such as "Do I not like that" Will be sadly missed.

Re: News from the World

George Michael was huge in the 80's and the 90's, unfortunately due to his lifestyle choices he sadly ended up as a reclusive washed up shell of his former self. The man had so much talent and sadly threw it all away for a life devoted to drug addiction. Back in 1992 George Michael was the standout performer at Wembley Stadium at the Freddie Mercury Tribute concert, So good was his performance that rumours started immediately in the aftermath of the concert on the possibility of George fronting Queen as new lead singer. This ofcourse never surfaced which was mainly due to the fact that the band weren't quite ready to hit the road again so soon after Freddies death but it will always leave us with a what if scenario.

Just yesterday morning I passed comment on just how many stars who participated at the Live Aid Concert in 1985 are no longer with us. George Michael sadly joins this ever growing list.

Re: News from the World

Yes I heard the news yesterday on Rick Parfitt and I was very shocked, I had no idea just ill he was, earlier this year he had made a very difficult decision in announcing his retirement from the band. I ofcourse fully expected him to come back as the man clearly loved and lived for the music. Technically he was never the most gifted guitarist but he made up for this with his colourful onstage persona aswell as catchy riffs.

With regards to status quo, will they still continue or sadly will this be the end of the bands career. status quo and Rick will always fondly be remembered for opening Live Aid in 1985. A year later status quo took to the Wembley stage once more as support band to Queen on their Magic Tour. (Sadly no footage on this has surfaced) This is truly a sad end to 2016.

Re: News from the World

The Berlin market attack suspect Anis Amri has been shot dead by police in Milan, Italy' s interior minister says.
The man, who opened fire on police who asked him for ID during a routine patrol in the Sesto San Giovanni area in the early hours of Friday morning, was "without a shadow of a doubt" Anis Amri, Marco Minetti said. One police officer was injured in the shootout.

I' m quite shocked, since this happened only few Km from my house and this morning I saw many police and Carabinieri patrols on the road to my workplace.
Now I know why

Re: News from the World

Well I am sad about this news but in the times we live in I am not the least bit surprised, Islamic Terrorism has been plaguing the western world ever since 9/11 and every time it happens now all I can think about is, who is next. It's a very bad time to be living in now, what can we do, the fuckers are spread all over the world, declaring any sort of war on them won't cure the problem.

Any sort of atrocity or evil is a hard thing to comprehend but the tragic thing is right now babies are being born who will be the next generation of terrorists.

Having visited Berlin myself in 2014 the city will always hold a special place in my heart so I also pass on my sincere condolences to yet more innocent victims.
