Former Manchester City and Bayern Munich star Daniel Van Buyten retires from football.
Belgium defender Daniel Van Buyten has retired from football
The 36-year-old, who played for Belgium at the World Cup in Brazil, was released by Bayern Munich at the end of last season but, despite attracting interest from Brussels club Anderlecht, he has decided to call time on his career.
In an open letter published in Belgian newspaper La Derniere Heure, he wrote: 'Important decisions are often difficult to make. I have realised that over recent days. And reason often trumps emotion.
My final goal was to play at the World Cup and to give something back to my country.
'Since January I worked hard and prepared for the big event with the utmost professionalism. My body has certainly suffered for it.

Manchester City’s Sergio Agüero signs new five-year contract.
Sergio Agüero has become the third Manchester City player this week to sign a fresh five-year contract, joining the captain, Vincent Kompany, and playmaker David Silva in doing so.

Germany's top two divisions will use the referee's vanishing spray to mark out free kicks from this season, the German football league (DFL) said on Monday.
"After the experiences in Brazil the league board has decided to introduce the vanishing spray for the Bundesliga and the 2. Bundesliga as early as possible," the DFL said following a meeting on Monday.

Despite allegations of racism marring his electoral campaign, Carlo Tavecchio was elected the new president of the Italian football federation on Monday.
Tavecchio beat Demetrio Albertini in the race to replace Giancarlo Abete, with the 71-year-old earning 63.63 percent of the votes in the third round of balloting. Albertini received 33.95 percent of the votes cast by the 274 delegates present.
Tavecchio had been the outstanding favorite before he sparked outrage recently when he discussed the presence of foreign players in Italy.
Using a hypothetical name, he said, "In England they select players based on professionalism, whereas we say that 'Opti Poba' is here, he was eating bananas before and now he's starting for Lazio and that's OK."
The statement prompted FIFA to ask the FIGC to investigate, while several leading clubs withdrew support for the amateur leagues president, who originally had the backing of all Serie A teams apart from Juventus and Roma.
